I'm going to do this on my Sig Sauer P229 .40

Feel free to do this on any gun you own. Airsoft, Paintball, whatever. They all need to be broken apart and cleaned.

Text is fine, but pics are better.

My Sig Sauer P229

Step One:
Remove Magazine

Step Two:
Lock slide back and physically check to make sure the chamber is empty.

Step three:
Rotate takedown lever 90 degrees down.

Step Four:
Depress slide release, while gently letting the slide separate from the frame

Step Five:
Field Strip: Remove the recoil spring and recoil spring guide. Remove the barrel. Weapon is now field stripped.

Step Six:
Cleaning: Clean the slide and frame with a soft bristled plastic brush. (A toothbrush works great.)

Step Seven:
Cleaning the Barrel. Run a wire brush from the breech side all the way through. Repeat several times. Follow with a clean patch soaked in Hoppes No. 9 or equivalent solvent. Follow with a dry patch. Repeat all steps until dry patch comes out clean.

Step Eight:
Cleaning the Magazine. This is an important step overlooked by many gun owners. The magazine is as much a part of your weapon as the barrel. Take good care of it, and you will reduce or eliminate feeding issues.

Step Nine:
Lubrication. A little goes a long way. Seriously. Lube the points as suggested by your manufacturer, with a drop of gun oil. I place a drop on all the pieces showing wear (12000 plus rounds). It has kept this gun running in flawless fashion since.

Step Ten:
Reassembly. Reverse the takedown and field strip procedures.

Add it on to this thread. That's the idea. I figure if everyone does it for one gun they own, we'll have quite a wealth of knowledge posted on how to strip most firearms out there.

Breaking down the AK-47

Here's a pictoral of breaking down my AK-47 (SAR-1)

The rifle in all its glory

First fold the bipod and remove scope (if applicable)

Check the chamber (safety ++)

Push this button in to remove the reciever cover

Push same spring again to disengage spring from reciever

Once spring is removed, pull charging handle back to remove bolt/gas piston assembly

Flip lever up on right side of pic to remove gas chamber (takes a bit of fiddling...also need to rotate to the left)

Ready to clean

Breaking down the SKS

Check the mag/chamber to verify it's not loaded.

Flip lever on reciever cover up and pull out (might take some wiggling). If you do this with the bolt locked back, the spring will pop the reciever cover off without warning.

Reciever cover and spring (they're held together by an aftermarket recoil buffer in this shot)

Pull the bolt & bolt carrier out by pulling back. They may separate...no biggie.

Bolt & bolt carrier

Move this lever behind the gas chamber 45 degrees (aprox) clockwise. It's really hard to move by hand, so I use the flat end of a ball point pen so it doesn't scratch the metal.

Lever at 45 degrees or so...grab the gas chamber and pull out.

Tilt at an angle and the gas piston will drop right out.
I want to get an SKS but it seems alot harder to strip it than my AK
bah....still easier as hell

most you'd need is a ball point pen (as indicated)
