Asus m4n82 ethernet up and crapped out

i tried :

-updating bios, and making sure lan was enabled,
-updating ethernet drivers (which unless im missing something is part of the chipset drivers)
-different cables

all that and still nothing. no lights, no nothing. also have no ! in device manager.

running windows 7 btw

did you try a different port on your router?

i tried a direct connection to the modem as well and nothing

i did find that the lan is NVIDIA Gigabit MAC Realtek 8211CL but of course i can't find a driver for just that.

hmm. well i think the reason i saw no ! (and still don't) is cause the network selection under device manager was hidden. so i unhide it and there are like 10 different options and all showing WAN miniport. and they are all different (ikev2, ip, ipv6,l2tp, network monitor, pppoe, pptp, sstp)

and running a troubleshoot on it says that the drivers aren't installed.

Download a Linux livecd, like Knoppix, and see if you have internet access after it loads.
This may help determine if it is a hardware issue or software.

Thanks BD. Now, what's up with all the WAN miniports?

JPF_ 01-22-2012 08:08 PM

Try another device on the same network patch cable?

If it does not work, use wireless or a usb --> rj45 port adapter.....can be had for less than 20 bucks....

edit: Chipset has little to do with networking......can always have network drivers and have internet access as long as network drivers are there....

Most likely yes assuming you have ruled out network cables, etc.
Since you state the device doesn't even show up in Device Manager then it sounds really dead to me.

For what a new NIC costs, I would just pick one up and call it a day. First figure out what type of PCI slots you have, then search for a NIC on Newegg or your favorite place / local place. I prefer Intel based NICs, but most anything will do. Best plan is if you use the 'egg, just check reviews. I imagine just plugging it in and booting up that Windows will find it right away. If it's really new, at most you'll just need to download the drivers from the vendor.

blackbeaSSt 01-23-2012 03:59 AM

yeah i'll just tell the guy he needs to splurge and buy a new NIC.

and BD, that link is for a vista version. 7 didn't like it too much!
