BFG 5700Ultra vs. ATi 9600xt

hay guys,

once again, i m torn between these two cards. other than the 20 dollar price difference, as far as performance goes i found the 5700 ultra to take the performance lead by about 10% in all benchmarks. this is of course negligible, but then again i was forced to remember the difference in image quality, with ATi having the edge thanks to its meticuous attention to detail. but then i saw a benchmark with AA and AF enabled, and the 5700 was still on top. im abit confused here, i would like to get the ATi thanks to the free half life 2 promotion, but then i look at the 5700 ultra and its superior technology (uses DDR2, has a much higher effective memory clock, and nvidia cars tend to have more leeway on memory overclocking, as my experience with memory overclocking on ati cards has been nothing but shit.) i read one review saying that they couldnt overclock the memory on the 9600 past 30mhz of stock. i can attest to that, because iwasnt able to do it with my 9100 either. so ultimately, right now the deciding factor for me to go with the 5700ultra is the lifetime warranty from BFG and the its potential. please try to persuade me otherwise guys. thanks.

you can get a lifetime warranty from companies like Visiontek. How do you know that Nvidia is winning those benchmarks without lowering image quality? What about DX9 performance?

wtf? the 9600xt was built to be overclocked, not to mention the better image quality, and free HL2. Who the hell is going to notice a fucking 10% speed difference? And what the hell are you talking about superior technolegy with DDR2, etc. ?? DDR2 runs as hot as hell and is thus not as stable especially when overclocking. I'm tired, buy the damn 9600xt and wait for nshitia to get their act together.

you can't really compare the two when trying to see which oc's more...that's like saying a P4 cpu oc's more than an AMD cpu, you can't compare the two because they have 2 different designs.

Wow a 5700 that uses DDR2 :wtf:

The only DDR2 card I've seen is the Sapphire 256 mb 9800XT. And DDR2 isnt supposed to make a big difference right now.

how much are you looking to spend? the 5900NU is pretty good and around the same price as the 5700 Ultra

Doofie27 02-11-2004 04:26 PM

thanks for the responces guys... and the review i read was an ATi Review card, which isnt as good as the retail versions. all im saying is, im just a little bit nervous about buying another ATi. about the 5900 nu, i wish i could get it, but no local retailers are carrying it. then again, i just might be able to talk the parents into buying it online for me, its my 18th birthday and im asking for a new video card, how lame huh?

now about DDR2

DDR2 is rated to run at higher speeds, and was built specifically for gaming. i believe that regular DDR is only rated at 500mhz, while ddr2 is rated at 600mhz. now later this year, is where the real fun comes in at DDR3, which should own all.

my price range is 200-220, and only 220 because that is how much the 5700 costs at bestbuy, which is far fetched for me to begin with.

I just got the Asus 9600XT/TVD (I wanted the VIVO) and it's fucking nice. The default clock on the 9600XT is 500core 600mem.. my card overclocks to 574core and 700mem. Hell of a nice card for the $189 I paid for it. And since I bought retail the Half-Life 2 that's included makes it even sweeter... The Asus also has a Winbond chip that allows you to monitor voltages, core/mem temp and fan speed.

I can't really compare it as far as game performance. I upgraded from a GF3 Ti200 so almost anything is going to give me better image quality and higher frame rates.

yea go with ATI for now, maybe NVidia will make a good card soon

ATi + HL2 > ( nVidia * 2 )
