Can bullets be left inside people?

I was out shooting with some friends today. One of them has been shooting guns for over 20 years, but today in a moment of carelessness, a hand gun went off on its own somehow while while my friend was holding it and it shot a .45 round into his thigh and somehow the bullet rode down his leg, past his knee and lodged it self in his calf. He didn't hit any major arteries and has no nerve damage so the doctors have decided that it would do more damage to go in and get it and are just gonna leave it there.

Has anyone ever heard of this?! I thought the bullets would poison someone or cause infections if they were left in lol?

Anyways, this is your friendly reminder to not grow over confident in your experience and to maintain focus at all times!

Did they determine this based on what it was made out of or any trace materials it could have picked up in the barrel? I've heard of people still having fragments of stuff in them from decades before, so I guess it would be ok.

May have had a significant chance of destroying a tendon/ligament/entire muscle if they went forward with an operation. Need pics of X-rays and such, but HIPPA says no.

Also, it gets enveloped in scar tissue, so it doesn't necessarily absorb into the body as readily as you might think.

Damn...

It blows my mind that apparently the bullet bounced off his femur without breaking it, passed his knee without damaging it much and is now sitting in his calf. It was a .45 cheapo winchester round (not hollow point).

You'd think lead poisoning might be a problem.

was it copper jacketed?

joemama 11-04-2012 08:52 PM

Yep, I still have a .22 air rifle pellet that's been smashed up against my femur since I was 12 years old. Doctor said the recovery time for leaving it alone would be half the time surgery would require..

no. bullets can't be kept inside people. your friend is lying. and so is his doctor. call a lawyer and have him sued for malpractice. lazy doctors like that shouldn't have a license.

I spent 4 years with one in my leg, and until it creeped up and started causing my patella to dislocate I never had any problems. You have no idea what your talking about, see the links... that guy looks like he had half of a hardware store in him.
