It's not overkill, it's bad design.

I would never cut a dado in the drawer sides with a depth greater than half the thickness of the stock I used to make the drawer sides, because that would compromise the strength of the drawer sides.

I would never put a drawer bottom on that was of a greater thickness than the depth of the dado I cut in the drawer sides, because then the breaking load will be on the bottom of the drawer side instead of the drawer bottom, and bottoms are easier to replace.
