spotify u have to pick your music or subscribe to public playlists, it's more involved.
pandora you enter some songs you like and it starts playing in radio mode based on similar songs, you can like or dislike them to get better suggestions in the future. it's less hands-on but you don't get as much obscure/indie/unsigned stuff.
