Two Santa Clauses

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/01/26-0

I think this article is well put -- it describes in detail what I had been more casually observing myself. I want to hear a counter argument. Go!

edit:

cliffs:
-democrats are doing well in elections after the new deal because they are seen as 'santa'
-starting with reagan, republicans counter that by cutting taxes (santa #1) justified by the ideas of supply side economics
-but they also keep raising spending (santa #2) effectively giving democrats nothing to run on
-this forces democrats to be the 'bad guys' and actually reduce deficit to fix the ugly mess (clinton, and now obama)

So far under the Obama administration we have three wars, tax cuts for the millionaires and billionaires, subsidiaries for the largest and most profitable oil companies, tax incentives for large corporations to ship jobs overseas, a proposal to cut Social Security, Medicare, education, etc, weak health insurance reform, weak wall street reform, marijuana is illegal, a stimulus package that didn't go far enough, no investigations into the crimes of the previous administration...

Didn't like half of that crap start with the Bush administration. Hard to just put a halt on some things, and I don't think this country could really take all that change in what, under 3 years since he got elected :hmm:

And we would probably be in the same situation if the geriatric had won since the President is just a figurehead and holds no real power.

It's all Bush's fault, all the time.

Both parties want to give things to you to secure votes, antagonize the other side, and entrench their own power.

As to the OP: the balance under Clinton was balanced because of an economic boom and a government shut down forced by the congressional Republicans pushing for a balanced budget.
Note that they didn't do this because they actually have fiscal restraint (they've demonstrated over and over again that they don't) but because they wanted to be a pain in Clinton's ass.

Pleasantly, divided government worked out well for us.
