oil filters are not supposed to drain back into the pan, dry starts are not a good thing

So i sold + traded my project car.

I got $1500 cash + a 1988 GXL, which with a little love is now in excellent running order. Full records, purchased from University Mazda in 12/87. New alternator, starter, radiator, belts, battery, borla exhaust. Bone stock otherwise.

I now have 3 black rx7's, one of each generation. I should take a pic one day...

Other shop news, new helper is great. Getting cars out. 8 FD's at the shop ATM. Going to be a fun fall .

I really want an FD again -- I thought getting a shell and a Ellis Juan would be sweet, but looking back at some old videos of my old FD, I would love a well cared for stock model. I'm aiming at getting a nice comfy four door again for daily driving duties first though.

Filter assembly:

Typical oil flow through a combustion engine:

Mazda rotary engine, oil filter top mounted on rear plate of engine.

The anti-drainback valve keeps oil from draining from the outer portion of the filter, but what stops the center 'return' from draining by gravity? Nothing, because the filter position promotes this affect, which is why they do not make a mess when performing an oil change. The filter will always drain from the return when the engine is off. It doesn't matter though as the oil system is immediately resupplied during start up, and a film of oil is still present on the bearing faces to support this period. Stating that they drain directly back to the pan was a misnomer on my part, though gravity will eventually lead it there.

Hey Dope...I have a 93 Touring Shell in Florida not too far from you. I'd let it go cheap since I just bought a running base model.

There are some serious negatives that someone should only buy if they can handle bodywork and have the connections to get a title.

Just figured I'd mention it.

How substantial is the body damage? If I were interested in a track car, that would be a consideration, as it stands my current Audi will eventually be the track car.

I'll keep it in mind though in case the scenario changes.

asa, some filters do not have an ADBV. (anti drainback valve) because of either
a) their orientation makes them unnecessary
b) the engine has an ADBV set up built into the oil filter housing or something similar

Very nice...I so still love the FD body...sometimes I wish I sucked it up and took a chance buying a used FD instead of my RX-8.
