Do I really need to drop closer to a $1000 for a good rifle?
Only you can answer that question. If this is just a range toy and there is a problem and the gun breaks, will it cost you your life? If not, then do, go cheap. If your life depends on the function of the gun I believe other guns have features that are worth paying for.

Same here. My Colt LE6920 parts will interchange with my Bushmaster XM-15 E21S parts. (Not that I would do that, but I did test it out.)

Beyond that I wouldn't buy that AR because it is an A2 style. I prefer the A3 style flat top uppers. I don't know the brand or who actually makes them so I can't speak to that point.

Another question I have is how will this gun be registered? I cant find any info on del-ton's site about them shipping to a dealer or anything like that. It appears they just ship it to me, and I assemble it. How does this work?

They will ship it to an FFL. Del-Ton is well known, not some shady guy in his garage. No way would he ship straight to you a firearm (the receiver).

If you're going to get a railed forearm, get a freefloat (one piece) instead of the 2.

I'd get the kit shipped directly to you and get a stripped lower through your local FFL. 95.00 for a DT lower isn't a bad price, but after shipping and trnasfers it'll probably cost you just as much as anything you can buy locally.

Also, if you're in CA you can't buy the 30-rnd mag.

Interesting. Are there any other vendors that you recommend?

For an AR-15? Online? No, not really. Go to a gun show and you can probaly find an S&W ar-15 for around $950 with a $50 MIR. Spike's uses STAG uppers and parts, so I was very happy with a local guy who lifetime warranties my gun. And he said if I get optics, I can trade him my carry handle for flip up STEEL sights for free even three years down the road.

The AR-15 is a beautiful gun, never had a problem with it as long as you take care of it. Go for it.......It's a blast!

I decided against it for right now, looked at an AK-47 was so close to buying I put a deposit on it but backed out... I think I want a Mosin Nagant for now, anyone have any experiences with this one?

edit: Also, someone at work told me that tons of AR rifle builders are popping up... they are apparently snatching up AR parts that are not to spec for the better manufacturers that are sold off as scrap... and then selling them as parts / kits in their rifles... I think I'll go with a bushmaster or something when i get mine...

There are only a few manufacturers out there anyway. Most just re-brand.

Yeah there are a lot of AR builders, but they all buy from the same pool (mostly) of suppliers.

Which Mosin? There are dozens.

Well the popular ones you see now are the 1895 revolver

M91/30, M38 carbine and M44 carbine. All can be had well under $100 each.

Make sure you know what you're looking at. A Mosin Nagant is chambered in 7.62x54R. AK's are 7.62x 39. They are not inter-changeable. Both rounds are available, but 7.62x54R is not exactly what I'd call a popular caliber.
