Just submitted an application to the CMP. A few questions.

To all of those who have ordered from the CMP before I have a few questions.

I ordered a Service Grade M1 Garand and 480 rounds of Greek .30-06 ammo. Total came to just under $769.

1.) About how long should I expect to wait until they charge my card? How long before I should expect it to arrive?

2.)Is there anything I should do with the rifle once I receive it other than a thorough cleaning? Do I have to have a gunsmith inspect it or is that something the CMP does before selling all their rifles?

3.) Since I ordered the ammo and rifle together on the same application will they ship at the same time?

4.) Anything else I should do or be aware about?

I'm really excited about this gun. I've been waiting since the end of 2007 to order it.

You could always join the Garand Collectors Association for like $30 and you get 4 magazines a year.

It's been over 3 years since I've placed a CMP order and I know they changed stuff around though. So maybe the GCA doesn't count anymore.

The rifles used to be inspected and test fired before shipping. So should be good-to-go out of the box.

Typical CMP turnaround is like 3-4 weeks, IIRC...it's been a while.

Should be good to go after a cleaning and lubing. Could always do a function check with ammunition yourself, just make sure you know how to unload it once it's loaded.

I would assume so, possibly the ammo before the rifle, though it probably won't be shipped together in the same package, obviously.

Garand Thumb.

Watch out for the Op Rod spring when you disassemble it, it's a pain if you're not in control of it. Speaking of, do you know how to disassemble it? Surplusrifle has a good guide if you don't.

Garands are nice. I have a .308 one.

At what point does the CMP charge your credit card? Do they inform you ahead of time that they are doing it?

The reason that I ask is I used an account that I do not normally keep excess money in.

put money in it, no company notifies you that they're going to charge your account. They'll charge right before they ship usually. But you won't get a notification before they attempt to charge.

Says they are still affilated on their website. Thinking about joining since all the CMP clubs around here involve interviews, board meetings, etc. That was really the only thing holding me back as well.

A year?! Are you sure that they didn't lose your application/order?

It should take approximately a month according to surplusrifle.com

Nice. You should definitely post a nice "review" thread up.

That's right. For $750 you own a timeless piece of history. On the bright side you can look at it as an investment. M1 Garands won't be going down in value anytime soon.

My .308 did.

Bought it for $850ish with a like-new barrel and brand new stock on a Springfield receiver, now they go for barely $650. I can understand why though, with the price of .308 going up a lot.
