I must agree. I've spent years away from the USA, in seemingly attractive countries like Australia and Japan, but I've come to the conclusion that there's no country like the one you're from.

For most people, even if you think you hate living in the country you're in, be anywhere else for an extended amount of time and you'll realize that your home country is really the best place to be.

Now, when it comes to states in the USA, California can go fuck itself. I hate this place, and I'd rather be in almost any other state.

One thing about Australia, things cost twice what you'd think they should cost. So if you've saved up $100 USD, for example, you will only be able to buy about $50 USD of stuff due to taxes and what not. Something to consider if your plan includes living off of savings.

what you say is true. I live in Australia. I like Australia a lot and have famil in California so I can compare both countries easily.

Anyway my uncle was here in Australia in December 2008. He was complaining about how expensive it is to eat out in Australia and how little we get given for the amount we pay.

He also said seafood was a lot cheaper in USA. That you guys get better crabs and sell for way cheaper.

Our health system is probably better though in that our medicare system does cover you for most things and is paid for in your taxes. It isn't perfect though. For elective surgery there is a HUGE HUGE waiting list at all public hospitals. So unless you pay for it at a private hosptal then it will be a long wait. If it is an emergency or something then you should be ok at a public hospital.

But yeah, I agree that your dollar over here does not go as far as when in USA. That's the feeling I got. When I was visiting Sacramento, it felt like things were cheaper-especially alcohol and food.

Having said all of that, I was born in Australia and so I naturally prefer to live here then the US as you mentioned.

The US does have a very low cost of living compared (at least at first glance, I'm sure the differences aren't so huge when you account for the private healthcare etc.) to other western nations, it's something visitors have always noticed. Even Canada and Australia are cheaper places to live than the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands etc.

That said, born a Scot and while I could easily spend some time away my intention is to die here - your own country definitely is the best country in the world, it's just most people keep that belief to themselves :P

I agree. I'm from Los Angeles and the women here are quite pretty and appear to be more accessible.

I agree with the california statement.

However when it comes to the cost of living, it can be competitive with the US given the minimum wage in Australia is approximately 3-4 times the minimum wage in the US.

My buddy flips burgers at mcdnnalds for 19 dollars an hour. Night shift and overtime are cash cows.. 30+/hr for non managerial is not unheard of.

Other things: as I'm from Los Angeles, people often ask me if I own guns, have been involved in Drive-by's, etc. I just play along with it.

As mentioned, alcohol is incredibly expensive. Its 3-4 times the amount you pay in the states.

I really enjoyed Oz, but there's no place like home. (NY)

I really want to go check out wallstreet if I ever go to New York. I know wallstreeters are the enemy right now but still, I'm facinated with the markets and would love to see the New York Stock Exchange.
