Well, this warrants an explanation
My dorm is over 200 years old, the original grounds of my university. There is no bathroom, just a sink.

Space is limited, the entire mantle over my fireplace is my bar. However, I ran out of room and needed some storage space for cocktail stuff.

I am going to look into some better lather and a razor soon.
so I should look at a Merkur Safety razor? any other recommendations?

The brush is, in my and many others opinions, more important. Even shaving with a new cartridge razor is light years better if you have a badger brush and lather. Look into lather from Proraso and Taylor of Old Bond, and pick up a good (50$ ought to do it) brush. You'll be amazed.

I am offended by the world isajeep.

I've always wanted to shave with a straight razor since I saw Sean Connery do it in an early James Bond movie.

I think I'll seriously switch way from my Schick Quattro that I've been using ever since I received one in the mail a few years ago. Great way to get you to start using a razor but the traditional way seems better.

How often do you have to sharpen a straight razor? After seeing this thread the safety razor setup doesn't seem to bad but getting skills for the straight razor seem cooler.

I use Cetaphil as a shaving soap. Cheap, and it work well.

The Dovo Solingen looks pretty good. $109 on Amazon though.

That's good to know. Where did you get yours from?

My barber uses a straight razor to do an edge up for my cut but I never asked where he got his from. I've always had some fascination with traditional shaving and barber techniques. I go to a black barber shop on the east side of our town and that's where I learned about the hot towel on the face. It's a good fresh feeling to start off with.

Crappy phone pic.

Merkur Futur with "silvertip" brush. The bowl blows, so I generate lather on my face. The razor and brush are excellent.

I'm thinking of buying a kit with a straight razor. Is starting with a straight razor a terrible idea, as opposed to a classic safety razor?

As I said earlier, been using a Mach3 (w/ turbo strip that wears off after 1 day). Not because I like it, but because I never thought I could get a better shave. Never gave it much thought. I figured the razor burn was normal, or maybe my skin was just overly sensitive. This thread got me researching the subject, and now, I'm changing my ways.

After pouring over reviews I ordered up the following.

Merkur Futur Set (Polished Finish) $190
http://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Futur-P.../dp/B000WA8J0Q

3 tubes of Prosaso Eucalytus Shaving Cream $10ea
http://www.amazon.com/Proraso-Eucaly.../dp/B0007M11XQ

and 60 blades $15ea
http://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Double-.../dp/B0001XGNRK

Can't wait

and my wife is looking forward to it too

That sucks, I bought my setup for $30 less from http://razorandsteel.com/4Piece.html. Even gave me a free soap. As for why you needed three tubes of Proraso... a single tube could last you a year. You might not even like the scent... I didn't.
Instead of buying six packs of Merkur blades, I would have bought six packs of different types. The Merkurs suck balls for me, and I'm glad I spent my money on Feathers instead.

Oh well. It's your money. Have fun though... and shave on level 1 with that Futur until you get your technique down. It's quite an unforgiving razor.

I used to blow through cans of Edge, now I use Kiehl's Green Eagle shaving cream and I've gone 1/2 way through the tube - I bought it in October.
