You can get just the razor itself for ~$60 from Amazon

Is the overall kit a decent set, though?

Overall I really like the whole set. Looks pretty slick too... sitting there... all shiny... classing up the joint...

Keep in mind I've really nothing else to compare it to... just my Mach20 which I've already thrown out.

The bowl would be my only complaint. I find myself wanting a rounded one, like the OP's first pic.

Not ordering decent shaving creme online

My first thought was you trying to whip up a foam w/ this stuff

Yeah, that might work better than the soap

damn, im seriously concidering purchasing that merkur futur set, except it's $227.00
however i figure it'll be a lot more enjoyable than mach 3 blades that cost $25 for 4 of em tearing up my face, and it should last me forever.

Merkur Long Classic is in the mail.

Shaving with the proper soap + brush has made the mach3 shave itself better. Can't wait to get the proper razor going.

I need to get a proper razor but I don't want to spend more than $40 or so for one. What are some suggestions?

Both the merkur classic, long classic, and heavy are in that price range, I think. That's why I went with the long, wanted something cheap to learn on before I spend the big money.

If you're in USA, check http://www.classicshaving.com/page/page/522941.htm for those razors at $30 or less.
If in canada, this ebay store has good prices and i had a good experience dealing with him: http://search.stores.ebay.ca/The-Cla...506755QQsofpZ0

I have no experience with the razors, just helping you find some in that price range since I was looking there myself.

I'm gonna order one soon. Also, I need a cheap and good brush - but the stuff I use is brushless.

Is it necessary to have a stand for your brush, or is it ok to just stand the brush up on its handle?

I want to give this a try, I use a Mach 3 and Edge gel, but have the same complaints as everyone. I can't get a close shave, and my face is always irritated. I'm also trying to do this as cheaply as possible.

Here's what I'm looking at:
Merkur HD $37
Art of Shaving kit - brush, pre-shave balm, shaving cream, aftershave balm $38
Art of Shaving Brush Stand $6
30 Merkur Blades $15

Anything else I'll need? Anything I should get something different for? How are the prices -- comes to $110ish shipped.

A better looking stand and a mug? Also, might want to try different blades at smaller quantities for a first time to see what you like. Someone confirm this so I can order this shit too ... too lazy to search for my own merchandise, but at ~ $100 can't go wrong...

I hear all over the net that it needs a stand... I suppose it so the water doesn't collect on a wooden handle or inside a metal handle and start to ferment/rot/gain consciousness. As long as you shake it out well, I don't see how it'd be a problem though.
