Mac Gaming problem...

So I'm relatively new to Mac and I've really appreciated that Valve has released Source engine games for the platform so I don't have to switch over to my Windows install.

Sometime between Wednesday and Thursday something has caused all of my source games to drop from 70-100fps to <20fps. TF2, CS:S, L4D2 and DOD:S. If I reboot and start playing I can get a good minute or two in of lag free gaming before the game starts to choke. I've tried dropping all my settings to the minimum but I can only recover to around 30fps which isn't working for me.

Any ideas on what would cause this or how to test? I don't have any other games for Mac so I don't have anything to compare to...

I didn't notice anything abnormal in the Activity Monitor. Any help would be appreciated.

do you see artifacts in game as well? if so, probably overheating.

Nah nothing that would make me think overheating, no artifacts. it would seem strange that it would start overheating suddenly after behaving fine since I got the computer in July. Especially since it has been getting pretty cold here recently and I was doing a lot of gaming in the summer w/out air conditioning when it was in the high 30's...

I'm on a MBP if that helps. My original thought was that this might be a steam or source update, or maybe a Mac update.

I have an install of windows 7 on this computer and games appear to be running fine on that side.

since it's running on a cloud, is it possible you or a roommate was dling something, or maybe their servers are just getting bogged down.

I didn't realize that they made OnLive for Mac.

FPS's don't work like this. Your frame rate will not be effected if your roommate is downloading. I'd check to see if there's a background process running like Time Machine.

Thought I read that it worked by using the cloud system maybe not.

The Steam cloud is for savegames, settings and stats tracking - the computer runs 100% of the game. It's nothing like OnLive

Maybe something clogged your laptop's ventilation and causes it to overheat?

Since he said games run fine on the windows 7 install, we can rule out overheating. All that leaves, in my mind, are forced steam updates that are buggy or something running in the background that is eating memory or cpu power.

On my macbookpro, my fans in windows dont turn on, I had to get a program called smc fan control in osx, start it, restart into windows and the program still runs the fans. set em at 6000rpm for both and should be good. if its a mbp anyways.
