Old datsun's were decent vehicles, except their electrics sucked. Then they named themselves after instant noodles, and went downhill from there, with the occasional flash in the pan.

Stick to fords tex, or at least do some research when generations change before talking. It's on the same platform as the current Frontier / Titan, with a great V6 making plenty of power. It's called F-alpha. Go start googling.

It's not on an old frame, btw - the F-alpha platform is new for the Titan/Armada, and was modified for the Frontier/Xterra/Pathfinder.

Well, I know the first gens are. I haven't looked too close at the new ones, didn't think the change was that significant. I guess that means I have to restate saying I like Xterras to saying I like the older Xterras. The whole reason I liked them WAS the frame. They were good off-road and could take a lot of punishment. Now that I look closer at the new ones, they totally do not fit with what the Xterra is supposed to be, and that is disappointing. I knew they were filled with electronics which immediately writes them off as a capable wheeler (water and mud + computers = bad juju) but now that I look closer, a newer Xterra is about as capable off-road as a Crown Victoria. Learn something everyday.

EDIT - before that troll Grazehell comes and gives his "I told you so" speech, you highlighted where I talked about motors, not frames, and that is what I was arguing about the whole time. Fuck off, troll.

Thought the older ones were based on the older frontier too

What I know about nissins can be put into a thimble and it'll rattle like the proverbial bath tub BB

Yeah I did quite a bit of research on the new Xterra, they are definitely built on the Titan/Pathfinder/Armada F-Alpha frames...I've looked at the bottom of the cars listed and seen the similarities in the ladderframes. I liked the engine in the Xterra (but wasn't sure of it's reliability...). I went with the explorer in the end because the interior of the Xterra was extremely rough...kinda felt like a toy, but I know for a fact it's one of the better stock off-roaders out there, especially if you get the locking diff..., however, the IFS doesn't help it at all...if I got the xterra i would have swapped to a live axle

actually, the new frame pretty much rocks. Having driven both of them (in frontier form) off road and in some decently gnarly bits, I'll take the new over the old instantly. Especially the NISMO modified one with the extra offroad bits. They're also far more basic than a lot of the other cars out there electronics wise (compare them to an FJ, for instance).

So, do you haul or tow anything? Or did you just need to drive an SUV because...?

edit: I'm not knocking, I'm just honesty curious as to why people drive large vehicles that they don't need. There are a million better choices for personal transportation.
