4.0 WJ Purchase Imminent

After some research and seeing this car in person, I'm heavily inclined to purchase said car:

http://www.gillmansubaruofhouston.co...3226c255b5.htm

Going to go see it again tonight and discuss money with the dealer. Everything I've read describes the engine as pretty much bulletproof and the transmission as decently stout. Tons of room inside for long trips, gets better mileage than my STi and doesn't guzzle premium.

Interior is immaculate, no tears on the leather and only the driver's seat has some wear on it. The test drive was fine, car felt solid save for the almost pathetic lack of power, but as a DD i'm not going to care much about that. Engine and transmission felt solid with no hint of problems.

Carfax reviled possible problems with water damage, so i'm going to peel back some interior carpet tonight and crawl under the car to see if I can find any evidence of water damage.

Anyone have any thoughts on the car, good/bad/anything to add?

the jeep 4l i6 is a great engine. do you need 4wd in a dd? that's going to cost you some serious mpg

I would never buy that generation GC...in fact I wouldn't buy anything but the current gen GC (2011-) which is a totally different animal.

Thing takes trips to Colorado for ski trips. It already gets better mileage than my current car and doesn't drink premium so it's not that huge of a deal for me.

not trolling here ... but I always considered that the worse Jeep with a 4.0L I6.

The engines are great but everything else seems to go to hell. Can you get a Cherokee classic or whatever that thing is that looks like a brick.

Also, I think the fuel efficiency was sufficiently terrible in those and they were quite gutless as well ... compared that boxy thing I mentioned above, which was quite useful as an SUV (could actually tow and stuff quite well with a manual transmission.)

I guess I'm thinking of the XJ.

Don't expect the stock 4wd to be useful off-road, I get my tow straps ready at the start of a wheeling trip if there's a Grand Cherokee among us with a stock transfer case. I usually try to talk anyone with a GC into riding shotgun with someone else unless they're packing more than just a lift and tires and motor work. Even the V8's are useless. My Mazda will climb circles around 'em, and I have open diffs!

thats not the thinking over here at all.

as far as i know its>

NEVER buy a european car.
even the krauts hate opel.
only things that suck more than general euro cars are brit cars or anything renault.
only thing sucks more than brit or renault are yank cars.
buy jap.
mazdas are the mf bomb.
wisdom.

and im in the market for some new wheels at the moment - so ive brushed up on the spiel.

European cars over here are known for so so reliability and expensive maintenance, but people like them anyway. American cars are hit and miss...more reliable and cheaper to maintan than the Euro cars, but not quite up to the quality of the japanese. Until now that is....at least the last 4 years or so. Hyundai is becoming the new Honda over here, while Mazda has a reputation for fun cheap cars that aren't as reliable as the other Japanese makes.

My '91 Mazda (it's really a Ford, built at a Ford plant in KY) has better build quality than most newer Japanese or European cars I've driven. Don't even get me started on how cheap-ass my Dad's '06 Mini is.

the XJ is better, if simply for simplicity's sake.

As far as the reliability goes, they're pretty good. I know a guy who has one, almost exactly like that, who's a PI like me, and he puts a shit load of miles on it, and beats it hard, and it just asks for more.

As far as wheeling with a stock transfer case... Uh? only problem i've ever seen with the stock transfer cases is with my buddy's 1st gen GC - his chain popped off once, thats it. Shitty driver? the TC's arent all that different across platforms. maybe gears and diffs, but i cant see the TC being an issue

the 318's are shit, avoid at all costs.

Looks good - I'd be worried about the water damage though.

They're good solid trucks - If you intend to do any serious offroading, get a dedicated tranny cooler, otherwise just feed the beast gas and she'll go.

they don't have any serious problems. You may get some niggling issues, but it won't ever leave you stranded.

EDIT: now that i;ve looked at it again, that is the exact same one as my buddy's - though different transfer case and leather. those transfer cases arent as strong as the regular 4hi4lo2hi, but they aren't bad. see if you can talk em down though. 7k seems a little steep, 6k is more where i've been seeing em, but they may be a bit higher where you are (I'm Boston though, so our prices are a little steeper for 4X4's too)
