ANY transfer case that is not a straight up 2wd, 4wd, 4wd low case that does not allow any slip whatsoever when in 4wd is useless for more than a couple hard wheeling trips. Even the ones in many Wranglers are terrible. Mind you, this is first hand experience, I used to own a Wrangler, and I burnt up a transfer case with a box-stock 2.5L 4 banger, and some nice tires. Damn thing had a clutch in it.

WOT in 4 low ftw. Never had any probs in my toyotas but i didn't really do any rock stuff and I was only on 33s.

Build quality did not change throughout the years, in fact the design and engineering of the 97-forward model brought a lot of perks to the chassis (XJ) but the running gear did not change much nor did the assembly plant.

I love to twist the knife on someone else but I do thoroughly support the Jeep Cherokee and feel that your rite of automotive passage has not been completed until at least one has graced your life for some period of time.

The lackluster V6 didn't come about until around 05' for the Grand Cherokee (WK) and 07' for the Wrangler.

Hey man, I'm rollin' 31's and I go places lots of guys won't go on 35's. I grew up driving off-road, and I'm not afraid to blow something to pieces, especially if someone has a video camera rolling. But I do dumb shit like welding the spider gears on my front diff together, and I'll sit there on the rev-limiter even if I stop moving because sometimes, sometimes - you heat the tires up and get that extra bit of traction that gets you over.

I honestly need to invest in a car to drive to work though, all I gots to get me to work is my
'lil Ford powered Mazda.

Short wheel base is nice, don't need huge wheels so much. What do you have now?

Mini isn't so impressive. Audi A1 for the same money has better build quality.

The 4.0L is a real dog. If you're looking at WJs you want the V8, period. Gas mileage is about the same and there is no much difference in cost.

All years and models have a slew of common problems, the center part of the dash on every one of them creaks and flexes over 1/4" when you rest your leg over a little, the radio pops on and off intermittently, they all leak coolant from a few places, they have terrible throttle lag, and there is cheap plastic everywhere. As if you would know a nice car if it fucking ran you over.

I own two 4.0 cherokees, a 96 and a 2001. If they still sold the XJ in the same format I would go to a dealer tomorrow and buy one. I would buy a WJ with a 4.0. I would trust the 4.0 motor to be as reliable as a volvo redblock, which is saying a lot.

I have the high performance V-8 and no problems yet [knock on wood]. Seems to require spark plug changes more frequently than most engines. And add at least one engineer to the list to be summarily executed who made the rear one on one side almost impossible to get to.

Hey - I said nothing about actual reliability. Throw a real transfer case in 'em and some good suspension under there, and you're good to roll for the most part. Just go easy on the Dana 30 front axle if you got one.
