Recommend me a rifle...

So, I'm turning 18 in some months, and am interested in owning a rifle. I'm mostly interested in range-shooting type of stuff (not really home defense). I would prefer it to be cheap, the ammo to be cheap, and fairly reliable. I'm interested in AK variants, but really open to anything. Can you guys throw some price points at me and what I can get?

BTW, I live in California (More like Kalifornia LOL AM I RITE?!?)

I'd get a Garand or Mosin Nagent. Nagents can run for as low as $100 iirc.

id like to recomend a garand too, but hes gonna get bent trying to feed the thing. if he intends to shoot more than 20 rounds a sitting and does not reload.

since you are looking at cheap/good guns and it will be your first one, get a rugger 10-22, under 300 usd normaly (often alot cheaper) 500+rounds for 10usd, and fun :P

if you like it you can step up to a better rifle (read larger caliber) such as a SKS/AK or a grand or any of the older surplus military rifles (the french MAS bolts are a good gun (normaly only droped once)) the down side of most of the battle rifles is that the ammo will cost alot mroe then a 22, for exampe 20 rounds of 7.62x39(SKS/AK round) is normaly around 3usd, 20 rounds of 308 (common US MBR Main battle rifle) round are 20 of ~8USD 30.06 is normaly a few bucks more, and ofcoures target/match grade ammo will cost alot more, and is a waste for most shooters.

By inexpensive, I meant sub-$1000.

The ruger 10/22 looks like a good deal and what I was looking for. Now I just need to find a nice hard-case for it...

I reccomend a Nagant as well. Yeah it has some kick, but im gonna assume you have shot guns before, and can deal with that. Plus, they are pretty damn accurate, and solid for the price. Just remember to be picky when choosing one. Make sure its is in GOOD conditions prior to buying. For the price, its is deffinitly worth spending $100 to $150 on a good one, rather than one that got all beat up from previous owners.

How about an SKS? Same ammo as the AK (7.62x39), many Cali-Legal customizing options available for it.
