How far away could you expect to hear a handgun shot from, in a relatively populated area?

I heard some gunshots from the SW last night that sounded pretty distant...today I read in the newspaper, that a guy was gunned down in his driveway about 3.5 miles (as the crow flies) from where I was when I heard them...is it possible that those were the shots I heard, or not?

edit: I think it might be, it was about the same time (8:30 pm, whereas if I hear gunshots around here, it's not usually until at least 11 or 12, that's why I noticed it as unusual)

hills, structures, humidity

Let's say about 50% humidity, relatively flat, a few buildings, mostly residential or 1-2 story commercial, nothing too tall.

my guess is at 3.5 miles, you may have pretty good chance of hearing it, although not real loud.

I was afraid of that. I hear gunshots all the time and it doesn't really bother me, but when I hear that they actually killed someone, it's pretty depressing.

You will be able to hear a gunshot on an open plain without much trouble, by the time it gets to you it will sound distant, but the bullet reaches you before the sound.

while hunting on my 1000+ acre lease, i can hear gun shots from miles away. Or not hear one thats really close. It all depends which way the muzzle is pointing, and the surrounding area. These are also larger caliber rifles, .270 on up. A .45acp, 9mm, will just sound like a pop, and not a long report like these rifles create.

I used to hear gunshots every once in a while when I was growing up. But we lived on the edge of a rural area so I'm sure most of them were coming from a mile or two away and were hunters or people just out target shooting.

Yeah, but I'm in downtown Atlanta...I'm pretty sure they're either hunting or target shooting too...just with people.
