Guys, he wants this for backup against warthog sized game while in the woods. I don't think concealability is really an issue.

Commiepunk: I really don't think a .40 is adequate.

TehGoat: a .45ACP for protection in the woods is probably inadequate as well, if you really are worried about stopping a warthog or something equally large and angry.

Yeah I was just addressing commie, I don't know what it takes for a warthog, but I doubt I'd have less than my 10mm.

Warthogs are fucking big and fucking mean. They hunt them around here. Most people use a handgun for protecting their dogs from them.

I personally would go with something with the word magnum after it, starting at .41 and above.

This is something I've always been a bit confused about.
What's the harder-hitting round? The .44 Mag or the .45 ACP?

Hate to hijack the thread, but what about a classic handgun. Can anyone recommend one? Maybe something from the 40s or 50s?

Start a new thread and be more specific (e.g. what caliber, semi or revolver, purpose, etc.).

They are in totally different classes. The .44 Magnum is a substantially harder-hitting round than the .45ACP. The 210 grain .44 Magnum has almost 3 times the muzzle energy and nearly double the muzzle velocity as 230gr .45 ACP hardball.

Think the .460 S&W is probably the biggy right now, but is it even in production yet?

200gr. round @ 2250 fps = 2250 ft/lbs
