Given all the canadian links in your sig, I'm going to assume that you have no idea what it means to actually take part in passing laws.

Tobacco is way the fuck stupider than pot - that being said, I think weed is a waste of time and money and I don't think we'd be doing anyone a favor by legalizing it.

Although cars may "kill" people, they're also a great way to get around - marijuana just makes you stupider and happier for a bit. Surely you can at least accomplish something worthwhile that will make your brain release a few happy chemicals while sitting around at home instead of smoking up.

I have friends who smoke pot often, and they are definitely losing it up there. It's not an outwardly harmful drug, that's for sure, but I don't think having it readily available is a great idea either - external stimulus is shit for a developing brain. Legality above the age of 21 (as some have suggested) wouldn't be too bad, but that makes it much more accessible to the younger kids as well (think cigarettes).

Cigarettes aren't really a "high" (well, they are, but not so much an impairing one), so they aren't really a fair comparison to pot. Alcohol is interesting to compare marijuana to, and I think that it is about on the same level as it - however, having only one legal drug (booze) is probably the best way to keep it, since we're going to have to have some sort of state-sponsored method of getting high... but we don't want to open it up to everything, for the people's sake. Plus with all of the hype/taboo around DRUGS (pot, coke, you know, not alcohol, heavens no!) we're never going to convince everyone anyway.

You understate the benefits of pot. For many people it makes all those worthwhile things that much more worthwhile and enjoyable, it can easily be an activity enhancer instead of an activity on its own. Not to mention medicinal benefits we both can probably agree on.

Do you really think cigarettes are more accessible to kids than pot is? Lets be serious here, the laws in place do a pretty good job at keeping cigarette sales to minors at a minimum. When a drug is illegal on the other hand, dealers have no problems with selling to kids, and they do.

This can be solved by making alcohol the illegal one, it's a lot more destructive anyway.

Or we can all be reasonable people and not worry about what others put in their body as long as they don't harm anyone but themselves.

I think we should get at the root of the problem and make people not have to smoke drugs to feel normal - but hey, easier said than done.

Most of the kids I know that smoke pot also smoke cigarettes... it's not terribly difficult to get someone older to buy 'em for you (just like booze - I think more kids drink than smoke weed, right?), but gettings drugs from dealers is also easy, admittedly.

The general social outlook toward alcohol and other drugs is too strong to make a change - we've made alcohol our drug of choice, and it's pretty damn hard to change that.

As for self-harm being legal... most people are made to seek counselling if they cut themselves or are depressed or do stupid shit, and it's kinda the same thing.

Edit: As a side note, I hate the smell of pot and cigarette smoke - if someone's has been or is drinking, they have to be pretty close for me to smell it off 'em, but smoking is pretty public and rather annoying.

So smoking is a no-no, but popping pills is fine, right?

I'd rather pop a pill of pot than smoke it. If that were possible. As far as I'm concerned, aspirin is a better painkiller than pot.

edit: pot is self-medication anyway - we shouldn't have to "medicate" our everyday lives, but apparently it's just that shitty.

Aspirin can also give you ulcers and Reye's.

And marijuana isn't used primarily as a painkiller. I think that's your problem.

As far as marijuana being "self medication" how do you feel about it when it's prescribed by a doctor?

I think the part about self harm is not why people give a shit, nobody gives a shit if you harm yourself, what we care about is if it's going to affect us. Either you're going to cost us more money or you'll be an eyesore, eliminate the possibility of those two things and I doubt anyone would give a shit.

Problem is, there are a lot of stoners who are leaches with nothing to do and then you have to worry about "is their habit going to cost me $$$" or "am I going to have to look at or walk over thier fucking ass on the way to work?".

Or are they going to win a Nobel? And help put actual criminals behind bars.

Or win the olympic snowboarding event.

Or start the beginings of psychology.

For me the best argument for cannabis legalisation is harm reduction.

Prohibition makes things worse, of that there is no doubt. Look at Holland and their curiously low number of teenage cannabis smokers. What does that tell you?

These kids have been brought up with widely tolerated cannabis use and dealing from outlets the local government keep a strict eye on. Theres a strict no tolerance rule when it comes to selling to minors, 3 strikes and you're out I think. No more coffeeshop licenses to be granted etc, its made for an atmosphere where if a coffeeshop is not responsible (selling to minors, allowing hard drugs on premisis etc) in its running then it'll very quickly get shut down.

Remove the taboo, expose people to it and teach the kids the absolute truth - and we all know the absolute truth, pot can be very damaging to some and almost always damaging in excess - and you end up with a workable system that doesnt needlessly punish those who do indulge while putting an end to the glamourisation of cannabis use that you see in other countries with stricter legislation. Those who need it can have it, those who are curious can have it, those who don't want it can be safe in the knowledge that there is every effort being made to promote responsible use.

Hazardous to your health? Excuse me? I think burning fat and building muscle is a helluva lot less hazardous than blood loss and emotional trauma.

If you snowboard safely and rollerblade safely, as prescribed, it's not particularly harmful. If you smoke cigarettes as intended, or cut yourself with the intended purpose (scars YAY), or kill yourself, it's quite a bit different.

Pain and nausea seem to be the two areas that marijuana targets - but please, link me.

If a doctor (let's think of it as being the perfect doctor - one that actually picks the right cure for the problem) determines that marijuana is the best course of action, so be it - but I'd think that a synthesized form of the drug (or concentrated or whatnot) would be healthier in that you wouldn't have to be exposed to smoke at the same time.
