AC to DC power supply
9V 650mA,110 - 240V AC input
5.5 x 2.1 mm Plug center positive

3 bucks a pop and 5 for shipping on amazon, but maybe you can get a deal if you mail and order more in one hit?

not sure if theyre nay better than ebays 2,5 variety though. 4.5 out of 5 stars (16 reviews) sounds ok though.

Already ordered the DC jacks for the clocks, 2.5x5.5mm.

Gonna see what I can find on alibaba.

Gonna say $80 CAD for a kit of parts to solder together yourself, and $100 CAD for a fully assembled clock.

Gee,
I remember your first run and it had me scouring the internet for a BLUE version. Now I know there is no such thing as an actual Blue Nixie tube, but are there any imitation tubes that can do it? I would pay a serious premium to have you make one with blue numbers.

If not.. should I just buy something like this one for 185 bux?

A nixie tube filled with argon gas would theoretically be a blue nixie tube... just a matter of getting it done. If you've got any shops in your area that make neon signs, call around - see if one of them can replace the neon gas in a nixie tube with argon, and if so, how much it would cost to do. I figure they can nip the seal off the top of an IN-14, braze on a glass tube, vacuum and refill with argon through the tube and twist it off.

If you find a shop that can do it, I'll mail some tubes down your way for them to try this with. Sadly there's no local neon sign shops here anymore.

Yeah our last neon store went under last year. I thought I remember some sort of blue VFD version that had a nixie look to it. I'm actually really starting to like the look of the one in the link I sent you.

I'm not a fan of the "underlighting with blue LEDs" look, but that aside, it's a damn nice looking clock. I love the IN-18 nixie tubes.

I've fired a few e-mails around to some neon shops I've found online, we'll see what happens. Really tempted to try the blue nixie experiment.

If you're into trying it, I'll be your financial backer. Sersiously, I want one, and would love to fund a fellow [M]'er. Now I have to go google Argon clocks all day. Thanks..

edit: so the 'faux Nixie' look with VFD's seem to all be this style. I still dig it.

I think all you will need is a vacuum pump, micron gauge and a torch. (and some argon, but thats easy to get at any welding store)

You need pure argon for this, other gases will cause cathode poisoning and make the "blue" nixie wear out for a while. I'm suspecting that welding argon isn't all that pure. You'll also need glass fittings, a couple of valves, a suitable tank to hold the argon at near or just above atmospheric for reintroducing it into the tube, a proper sized torch (probably can't do a clean job with a pipe soldering one)...

Or I can get a sign shop to do it, probably for a lot less money than putting together the gear to do it myself.

After chatting with a few nixie specialists, it looks like the best I can do with simple gas replacement is a "neon purple" color. Actual blue neon signs use mercury and phosphor coating, something which I can't add to a nixie.
