To-do list software? (Freeware preferably)

I'm at work in the typical office-space environment and I notice I'm always tasked with new things to do and sometimes it gets as much as 5 - 10 things at once I'm doing which can be quite confusing. Is there any freeware that allows me to have a to-do list on my desktop which I can check off when done? Thanks!

There is tons of free "notes" software that you can run and have sticky notes appear on your desktop.

I think Open Office, www.openoffice.org, contains scheduling software as well.
