lap top charging problem, could it just be the cord?

My laptop doesn't seem to be recognizing when it is plugged in. The battery ran down and died. There weren't any warnings about the battery coming to the end of it's useful life, and I don't think the battery is the problem. The jack seems like a solid, clean connection, and for a day or two it worked intermittently, but now it won't connect at all. Could it be a problem somewhere in the cord? Like between the power supply transformer adapter brick and the computer? Should I start trouble shooting this by swapping out the power cable? How tough would it be to find a power cable/what do I need to know to select a replacement that would work?

Sounds like a bad jack. Or rather, the connection the jack makes to the mobo.

Does it run with the battery out?

edit: maybe try a new cord, or multimeter the one you have.

the jack appears to be fine externally, the connection seems firm and solid. it's not reamed out like a bad audio jack. I'll have to get back to you on if it runs without the battery but I'm betting no. It doesn't seem to be a battery problem.

and it's not a mac O.o

They don't have to look bad. Mine didn't. The solder connections to the mobo get cracked or something, and it can't send the charge to the battery.

Try updating the BIOS firmware. Does the battery show up in the BIOS?

Your bios suddenly stopped recognizing the battery. It happens all the time.

It's dead dead. Won't start up plugged in without the battery, and the battery is dead. Won't charge the battery.

Does the failure you're describing happen intermittently over the course of a day or two and then suddenly be dead?

What's my next move?

Then it's not the battery. It's either the power cord, or the connector, or the mobo.

I've successfully re-soldered power connectors on motherboard laptops, FYI. It's doable.

Is it an HP laptop? My wife's DV6119 did exactly that, and it can be, variously: power connector to the mobo, connector from mobo to battery, or connection from mobo to vidcard (don't ask me how that works, just that it does). HP has some secret warranty that, if you bitch, which, scream, cry, and threaten lawsuit, you MIGHT get a refurb out of it, but it's still a shitty fucking design and laptop.

If you do, you're good long enough to sell to some fool; otherwise, give up and replace it.

Why does everyone keep jumping to conclusions? Jesus christ, the simplest and most likely explaination is a bad charger, they go bad all the time.

Goto fucking bestbuy or walmart, buy a universal charger, see if it works. If it does, thank fucking god. If it doesnt, then its probably the connector or the motherboard, so take the charger back to the store and get a refund, then look on ebay for a new connector, buy a 10 dollar soldering iron and some desoldering braid from Radioshack and have at it, its not rocket science.

I tried and failed. Trying to heat all those connections up with a solder iron at once is a bitch.

It was a shitter anyway though.
