Moving to the UK - How to ship for cheap?

So it looks like I am going to be moving from Vancouver, BC to the UK for a couple years.

I am trying to find a cheap way to ship a few boxes of mostly clothes and a few other small items without paying an arm and a leg. Anyone have any similar experience?

Honestly, its cheaper to just buy new stuff half the time. I never had to deal with it from a civilian perspective, but i saw the shipper bills even just for a few "afterthought" boxes, and it was like 200 dollars a small cardboard box.

If its jsut clothes, and you dont have super high standards and 150 dollar jeans you just cant not wear, buy clothes once you get there.

orrrr..... pack as big a bag as you can and take it with you as a "checked bag" for 50 bucks. Thats way cheaper than shipping, and i think you can take up to 5 checked bags on most airlines (if ya pay of course)

Hell, that's what I would do if I HAD to have my clothes/shoes. If it is cheaper to check the bags than ship them, do that.

For a comparison, I shipped three large boxes (3'x2'x2') by USPS to Stockholm for $550 with all customs. I couldn't find anyone cheaper.

When in Europe, if I must move myself (either want to pocket the moving allowance or didn't get one), I move by train with and found the cost quite reasonable because their is no baggage allowance ... if you need to move once in the UK.

If you're moving with furniture, you'll need a relocation company, which in Germany runs about 700€/m^3 with apartment pick-up / apartment drop-off and storage on both ends. This price seems relatively standard throughout Western Europe.

Also, if you have $150 denim, place them in your suitcase and take them with you in person.

When I was in england a loooong time ago clothes were dirt cheap as they are considered necessities and not overtaxed as other goods are. Even leather coats.

Maybe its still the same. check into it before you ship clothes that you can buy twice as much as for the same price as shipping costs.

Or find a person in the US military that is going back to england and slip him a few bucks to take your stuff over.

Quick advice on buying stuff while "here."

Most items will be 2-3x in cost in the UK:

For directly comparable electronics: expect a 1USD:1GBP conversion ... a new MBP is 999 GBP (1600 USD) when it's 999 USD in the states. Salaries do not scale the same way ... average salary in UK is 21k GBP and around 31k GBP in the Greater London area.

Clothes are the same:

Levis:

US: 40-60 USD
UK: 60-80 GBP (100 USD)
Germany: 70-90 € (110-140 USD)
Stockholm: 900 SEK / 100 € (140 USD)

At a minimum, everything has 20% sales tax, but you'll get screwed on the conversion.

With that being said, dressing more similar to the locals, does go a long way to fitting in with them, which may/may not be a big deal for you.

I've actually found that work clothing / suits are similar in cost (a Hugo Boss suit is similar in price everywhere).

Also, I'm not sure about your salary/housing arrangements ... but try this website:

www.globrix.com

and hope you're not in London unless you make reasonable money.

Upgrade to business class on the flight, get more luggage free and have an enjoyable flight for once...and then bring even more luggage. Shipping is the worst.

^ How much more luggage space are you allocated for business class?

I assume it will be more than can be purchased with the price difference between tickets.

IMHO paying for business for a relatively short red eye flight is a bit dumb.

Just put on 6 pairs of underwear, 5 pairs of pants and 7 shirts to board the plane....that should get you through the first couple months.

Standard upgrades day-of at the airport from coach to business are 400-500$. As I said, yo ualso get the benefit of business. It's a 9 hour flight. Having had MANY trips from the continental US to London, upgrading was always worth it.

However yes he did say "on the cheap", so it's likely not worth it for him.

why would he pay 500 dollars extra when thats hugely more than the maximum bags he could put on at 50 bucks extra a bag
