As time goes by consider doing the M50 manifold swap, ASC delete and maybe an HID kit. Other than that there isn't much a newer car can offer you for 'fun' imo. Even with that mani it's an excellent daily driver, lots of torque down low.

Auto/manual?

Records? VANOS working?

Ps. you need the air pump filter on the end of that hose next to the washer bottle
Interior is not as nice as the exterior/engine bay unfortunately. Driver's door panel is pretty floppy. Driver's seat has significant wear (powered vaders). Sunroof doesn't work. The digital dash numbers are almost unreadable in daylight and the "control center" display is missing about 1/2 it's lcd blocks. AC works, aftermarket radio works.
It already has an HID kit.

Records are not great. This owner only drove it about 12k in 3 years and didn't do a lot to the car beyond oil changes, new brakes and an alternator. Then there's basically no records for the owner before him who had it for 6 years/~80k besides a stack of parts receipts. The story I was told to go with these receipts is that the guy was in a BMW tech certification program and bought the car originally as a project car to learn on. Before that it looked to be dealer serviced regularly.

The good news is that the engine sounds wonderful. No clicking, tapping, clattering, marbley sounds even on a cold start. I'm no E36 expert though. 3 weeks ago I wasn't even thinking about buying a car, so my standard research process hasn't caught up to owning the vehicle yet.

I really need to get someone who knows E36 M3's in central ohio to give it a once over and tell me whether it's worth fixing up or if I should just turn around and try to offload it.

A VPB (blue) EP3 Si just popped up on ephatch for $3k in maryland with 125k miles. Needs some suspension work and such. Would be a good deal for someone on here that wants a fun car.

I like that last part - vanos will rattle if it isn't working and the car would feel sluggish under 3k. Then the chain guides and tensioners can wear out too which also cause a clatter so guess you won't have to worry about that.

Are you familiar with RTABS/FCABS? Know how to spot new ones? You didn't say manual or auto - if manual the transmission mounts are known to be a little soft also. When they wear out it can cause the famous "money shift" where you go from 3rd into 4th and end up in 2nd

You have the original style radiator with crimp on tanks. When those leak consider a mishimoto all aluminum. Check all your hoses and shit too, belts... I guess if you find a decent guy he should do all that.

I don't predict "insurmountable" problems with a E36 M3. Easy to work on and parts are widely available (not to mention DAT AFTERMARKET).

Stop throwing hate, it's getting fucking old.

Newb the "cheapish" bimmers are the most reliable ones.

This is true... while the older generation have niggles, the newer generation have things that outright fail.
