Benched last night

Barx5
95lbsx5
145x5
165x5
185x7

It was a speedy set, remember almost all of these are paused 0.5 - 1 seconds on my chest, I could have probably knocked out 10 - 12 185 if I doing touch and go.

It took 20 mins to do the 2 miles but for not doing cardio in forever I don't think that's bad at all. Not saying this de-bunks the myth that powerlifting means you can't do cardio but I certainly don't think it destroys your ability to run distances because I could have probably knocked a minute or two off my mile times but I wanted to keep up with her.

Kinda funny I guess. I still plan to bench later but just wanted to share this with you guys for those who think lifting heavy weights destroys your ability to jog/run.

i noticed the same thing - i usually either do a set of ~10 sprints on the treadmill, or flip my tire for 5 trips up and down the driveway for cardio when it's warm outside. i thought i would suck ass at running after only doing that stuff most of the last two years, but it's not really the case.

not saying i'm going to run a 25 minute 5k or anything, but my ability to run distance doesn't suck as much as i thought it would.

Good to know, I wonder how many people really think you'll be slug-like slow from lifting weight.

What are you lifting these days Whizzle?

hardly anything! we went to texas to visit my dad about a month ago, and since then work has really gotten busy. i haven't lifted in about 3 weeks.

told my wife last night that i'm going to start again this week though. it's tough when you have a baby at home - by the time i get done lifting and shower, it's basically time to put him to bed.

going to try and lift 3 days a week, still on 5/3/1. if you're interested, i'm on fitocracy: http://www.fitocracy.com/profile/mentner/

I think the whole anti-cardio campaign was started in the Rippetoe camp where it was all about lifting heavy on your workout days and spending the rest of the time eating and sleeping. Any other work outside of lifting was considered a negative because they felt that it negatively impacted recovery and gains.

Now you see a lot of those same guys including 2-3 conditioning sessions during the week. Even Rippetoe advocates getting out and pushing a prowler, Wendler loves hill sprints, and a lot of guys love barbell complexes.

Wendler even says in 5/3/1 that when his mindset was only on lifting and eating, he was strong as shit but he couldn't bend over to tie his shoe without turning red. I usually tell anyone that talks to me about working out to try and include some conditioning. I've never seen the point of being strong if you can't walk up a set of stairs without stopping to catch your breath.

Good point, maybe it was powerlifters that advocated that myth and not the other way around. I walk up 3 - 5 flights of stairs a couple times a day instead of taking the elevator and that isn't to bad so until I start to feel winded from that I'm not going to worry to much

Squatted on 5/3/1 schedule again
Barx5
95lbsx5
135lbsx5
195x5
225x5
255x5

Bar felt a little heavy but I got shit for sleep last night (Maybe 2 hours of continuous, kept waking up) and been eating like crap lately but still managed to get the set up.

Deadlifted last night, working sets were
260x3, 295x3, 335x3

Going to bench tonight, working sets should be
155x3, 175x3, 200x3 but I'm expecting to be able to do 5 or 6 reps.

Hit my bench numbers, got 5 on the last set of 200lbs and was doing a 1 second pause on each rep.

Did my squats last night, hit my working sets decently:

210x3
240x3
270x3

Last set was a little shaky but could have been worst.
I should overhead press tonight then take a rest day tomorrow.

Back to 5/3/1, Smolov isn't supposed to be a permanent routine, you can either choose to do 6 or 13 weeks and I decided to quit it after 6 weeks because my work schedule was to hectic for it. I can tell it helped my squat by a good bit though.

I always go for parallel or slightly under, ideally I'd like to hit exactly parallel for maximum power but I'm usually a tiny bit high or low depending on how flexible I'm feeling, it's the normal powerlifting style. I'll snag a video next time I squat since it's been a while since I recorded a video of it, but the angle I'm forced to film from makes it look a little higher than it is.

I overhead pressed today and it felt great, ended with 150x2 which the program only called for 1 and I almost got a third but couldn't get it above my head, oh well!
