Hypothetical question:

If someone figured out a way to have a whale ranch where whales are bred, raised and then slaughtered in basically the same manner as cattle, and this put the commercial whalers out of business economically, would that satisfy you?

Yep. That would put me at ease. I'm not a bleeding heart liberal piece of shit, I just see things from all points of view, and the ruthless slaughter of nature is something that I oppose in a very big way. I have no problem with cattle that are bred to be slaughered, why would I have a problem with them doing the same thing for whale meat?

But that would never work anyways, the whales would freak out every time you slaughtered one. They aren't mindless like cattle.

Actually, it's the whales are hit by the ships when they come up for air because the shipping lanes go through the whales breeding grounds. I understand that people need to ship things, but there isn't any reason, other than money, that they should knowingly go through where these whales are breeding and raising their calves. There is a major shipping lane right down the middle of the Blue Whales breeding/calving grounds.

Whales and other cetaceans are extremely intelligent animals. They aren't "smart enough to get out of the way of a big ass ship", because they ship runs them to exhaustion. After they are too tired to continue swimming at a high speed they shot them with the harpoon. The animals are then shot with a rifle, which usually doesn't kill them, and they drowned.

I was referring to whales killed by cargo ships and the comment still stands.

For those of you interested in the original Somali pirate question, from what I gathered from my Int'l law class last year, Int'l law only applies to when you have an incident between two two nations, whether they be two ships registered in different countries or two citizens of different nationalities etc. If you're from the same place you default to your national law. Somalia doesn't really have an international legal presence really so the likelihood of survivors bringing charges is minimal. However, because int'l law now considers citizens as well as states (i.e. you don't need your state to bring a claim against another and can do it yourself), you could potentially face repercussions for your actions if it came out that you went out with the intention of hunting pirates. Whether or not these repercussions would have any merit, I don't know; you're defending yourself but it could also be seen as entrapment. However, int'l law really does frown upon piracy so I doubt you would be penalized.

somebody call nine waaaaan waaaaaann, we need a waaaaambulance right now. Killing whales is going to destroy the planet somehow? And who cares anyway? If all the other asstards want to let the planet go to hell in a handbasket I'll let them and enjoy the ride. They can't screw it up too much before I'm dead, and I'm not having kids. If mother nature decides to object, it can whip our asses right quick. Jesus.

The IWC monitors whaling around the world, and its effects on stock. Killing a thousand whales a year illicitly won't affect whale numbers. It's a lot of freaking out about nothing, and those dumb hippies from that whale wars show need to go home and get real jobs.
