from http://www.globalchange.com/birdflu.htm

"As their lungs filled . the patients became short of breath and increasingly cyanotic. After gasping for several hours they became delirious and incontinent, and many died struggling to clear their airways of a blood-tinged froth that sometimes gushed from their nose and mouth. It was a dreadful business." Isaac Starr, 3rd year medical student, University of Pennsylvania, 1919 commenting on flu deaths he saw

this will not end well...

Todays Headline from http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/10/06/news/flu.php

Bird flu preparation goes global

The New York Times, The Associated Press, Reuters

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2005

WASHINGTON Health experts and other officials from around the world traveled here Thursday to discuss a coordinated response to the bird flu epidemic, the U.S. State Department said.
The gathering is intended to develop ways to share information and resources in case the avian flu virus mutates and begins to cause a human pandemic, which experts believe could kill millions within months.
More than 65 countries and international organizations are participating. The meeting comes a day after two teams of scientists announced that they had reproduced the 1918 Spanish flu virus, the cause of one of history's most deadly pandemics, and found it to be a bird flu.
The meeting also coincides with increasing criticism of the administration of President George W. Bush for the way it has prepared for a possible influenza pandemic. Democrats in the U.S. Congress called for the creation of a White House office to oversee the nation's readiness and response.

"The administration has failed to prepare adequately for a flu pandemic," said Senator Edward Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts. "The danger of a major hurricane hitting New Orleans was ignored until it was too late. We can't make the same mistake with pandemic flu."

This from http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/st...585977,00.html

Security fears as flu virus that killed 50 million is recreated

Ian Sample, science correspondent
Thursday October 6, 2005
The Guardian

Scientists have recreated the 1918 Spanish flu virus, one of the deadliest ever to emerge, to the alarm of many researchers who fear it presents a serious security risk.

Undisclosed quantities of the virus are being held in a high-security government laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia, after a nine-year effort to rebuild the agent that swept the globe in record time and claimed the lives of an estimated 50 million people. The genetic sequence is also being made available to scientists online, a move which some fear adds a further risk of the virus being created in other labs.

so I guess now we have the chance of two different pandemic viruses happening at the same time

at least you have a plan

People should have some sort of plan in place since as g stated earlier...the government will not be of much help if things go like they did with the recent hurricanes.

I think canned food and bottled water is a good start. A good stockpile of ammunition might be a good idea as well

First off, the governments of the world don't really amount to squat unless it's as a warning - when THEY start moving, it's probably already too late to do anything preemptively to head off whatever threat.

However, watch the reports that trickle out of the various nations. Watch the discussions on medical-professional news services like ProMed (which has been INSANELY active with H5N1 discussions for a while now). Watch for quietly-posted reports of governments buying up flu vaccines like mad, especially Tamiflu, which is one of a very few drugs that seems to work on H5N1. Watch what people that are or should be in the know DO, not what they SAY.

That said, your question is a good one. Is H5N1 the "big one" the immunology world has been fearing? Will it be the next global pandemic superflu that kills tens (or hundreds - remember, the world's population is WAY higher now than it was in 1918) of millions? Nobody knows - yet. That'd be why there's so much concern now, before it mutates into something capable of direct human-to-human transmission.
