Latest H5N1 news...

this from http://www.voanews.com/english/2005-10-07-voa25.cfm

Deadly Bird Flu Strain Suspected at First Commercial Poultry Farm in RussiaBy Lisa McAdams
Moscow
07 October 2005
Russian officials are working to confirm the first possible outbreak at a commercial poultry farm of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu virus, which can be transmitted to humans. Authorities say the bird flu has already killed hundreds of thousands of birds in Russia.
Tests to confirm the virus infecting the birds is the H5N1 strain are expected to take at least another week. But to be safe, Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry has ordered the closing of the affected poultry farm, which reportedly supplies about 100 million eggs to the Russian market each year.

It is a small portion of the trade, given that Russia's poultry farms, overall, produce about 36.5 billion eggs for sale each year. But the concern among villagers and farm workers is palpable.

One woman who works at the affected farm in Kurgan expresses her dismay. In comments broadcast on Russian television, the woman says officials first said everything was okay. Now, she says, they seem unsure. "And what can we do?" She says farm workers have now been told to start killing all the birds.

Russian specialists say up to 500,000 birds may be affected, and there is concern in Russia and elsewhere about possible bird to human transmission.

Interesting find

Additionally, the cell-culture derived technology would provide the potential ability to grow a pandemic avian viral strain that might be lethal or deleterious to eggs. There is currently a potential barrier to grow avian strains in eggs, since they have the potential to destroy the eggs.

Bump for unconfirmed reports of a couple cases turning up in Bulgaria.

If this keeps up it'll find a way to spread strictly among humans, and when THAT happens, well...

The World Health Organization now considers H5N1 to have a credible chance of becoming a global pandemic strain.

Yeah they did.

SARs could have been A LOT worse though, had it not been taken care of so promptly. Plus, only 10% of its enfectees die. Its weak.

What's different between SARS and H5N1 is how the medical and political worlds are reacting. SARS didn't prompt a 65-nation meeting to discuss how to deal with a potential pandemic, whereas H5N1 did. The WHO also never warned of an imminent pandemic of SARS in Asia as being a potentially critical threat to human life, whereas they did last week in regard to H5N1.

When it comes to hype over a potential disease, watch what the people in-the-know DO, and ignore what they SAY. If the news is all bleak but there are no real efforts to set pandemic-management measures in place, then it's just media hype. If the news is bleak and there are major efforts to get set up to deal with its spread, there's more to it than just media hype.

H5N1 has much more potential to be the viral "big one" than SARS did, although it is entirely possible that H5N1 won't be a superflu when it goes human-to-human. All in all it's still far too early to tell.
