I'm more concerned about the OP talking about being a novice hunter and immediately putting in for bear and moose. I would recommend spending a season going after deer first to make sure this is something you want to get into, I mean it's easy to talk about until you drop something big like a moose or an elk 6 miles in and over a couple ridges and have to pack it out. getting to the game and making the kill is a really small part of what hunting is all about.

ill agree with this, hunting elk and moose is another game vs deer, but at the same time, he is shopping for a rifle, and if I were to buy a rifle that I might use later on for bigger game, im not getting a .243 if you catch my drift. Sticking to the tried and true is usually the best bet, 30.06, .270 win, .308, and 7mm, they are all good go to cartridges. They can all handle anything you might encounter on this continent.

Don't think anybody does. .303 savage maybe?

Lee's are easy to pick up for around 100 bucks and they'll stand the test of time.
