Had I been driving a 45mpg TDI, and assuming both gas/diesel have averaged $1/L over the last 6 years, I've spent an extra $2800 on fuel driving the GTI. So I've saved money.

Start looking at other cars on craigslist and running the same numbers, you'll probably end up finding that a cheap V8 boat that nobody wants might be one of your cheapest options

This.

My dad worked out when bought his Jetta a year or two ago that, at the premium they wanted for the TDI, he'd have to drive something like 500K miles before the savings on fuel made up for the (enormously) higher purchase price.

Yep, which is why I refuse to buy one for a stupid price, my trip to work is only 30 miles round trip a day, so it would take me forever to see the gas savings, not counting any maintenance costs. I need to buy it for a reasonable price.

The way I see it is I can hopefully sell my truck for ~2-3k (bb is at ~3200, its a clean 92 4runner 4x4 in good condition) then add ~3k to that and hopefully buy something for the 5-6k range, which I think is reasonable for a tdi, older with high 100/low 200 on the clock. Ive grown up doing my own vehicle maintenance and even though I know very little about diesel, I imagine it's even harder to find a diesel mechanic if it's something that I can't do myself. With a car like that it needs a refresh, I love that everyone always marks up the cost while touting the engines go 500k+, sure that's great, and they may, but itll ride and handle like shit, it's like these sellers think the word 'diesel' is supposed to throw a veil over my eyes and not make me realize that probably 1/2 the bushings/bearings will be shot after 250k on the clock.

The reasonable priced ones sell like hot cakes, but Ive seen the same shitty 8k ones on craigslist standing the test of time. If i cant find a reasonably priced diesel after a while then I'll just end up getting a gti with a 1.8t.
The MK4 cars are a whore and a half suspension wise - I don't think there's any factory suspension bushing, joint or bearing left on my GTI, with the single strange exception of wheel bearings (only ever had one go). They're also prone to having half the interior break in some form, and I've fixed a couple of electrical issues (hatch wiring) so far.

I can look past half the "pains of VW ownership" that I get with the GTI, by the simple fact that it's a GTI. It's a fabulous highway car and it's fun as hell to drive. I think I'd hate myself if I drove a 2.0 Golf.

That being said, if I had my time back I'd probably track down a 4-door Golf with a 1.8T, or even a 1.8T wagon. 2 doors is a pain in the ass.

absolutely no automatic, and I'd rather it be a private party sale.

this looks decent but i think still a little overpriced, and no mention of timing belt being done.

I actually think I should have bought the 1.8t Wagon I was swonning over for a bit before I went out and bought the TDI. Not that the TDI is bad but someone poured lots of love into the 1.8t. You could tell it was their project, mem seats, climatronic, all the xtra bits you'd get with a GLX. and then some.

How much did you pay for the tdi if you dont mind me asking? Any tips or advice when I go look at one? I'm already lurking at tdiclub.

I'd love to have a 20th gti. I never had much problems with my mk4 vr6, I had a ghl exhaust, which I wouldnt do something that aggressive again since the drone on the highway was horrid, a cup kit for a mild drop, and just replaced the dogbone, that was about it. Aside from the coilpack, the car ran like a top and never really gave me any problems.

I wouldn't trust that website. Just the URL name seems suspicious

Just go ahead and post your spam.

Oh wait, you already did when you dug up a 10 year old thread earlier.

ehh. maybe one day, i want to keep it mostly stock, for being the lower hp 1.8t engine, it's pretty peppy, and I can drive the turbo miata if i feel like being boy racer, or the cbr if thats not fast enough. I just wanted something civilized and I always liked the mkiv platform from when i had my vr6. It's nice to drive something that doesn't make you deaf.

for now, I'll probably do small things, like replace suspension/engine/tranny bushings. I ended up picking up a set of lookalike bbs-ch rims so when i come up on a good deal for 225/40/18s ill get some tires mounted. The nice thing is that the PO swapped in some parts from a 20th interior, so it has a black headliner/pillars/etc so if i ever come across a set of recaros ill drop those in.
