Rather than read the thread, I'll just throw in what I do know.

-CVT models are ass. Do not buy one under any means

-Stick to 2008 or newer (2007 was the redesign; 2007s were plagued with first-year problems)

-Don't buy a high mileage one. Prices for maintenance are ridiculous. I'm guessing since it's your mom, she'll be going to a dealership. Budds BMW in Oakville, where my car came from, wanted to charge $1460 for brakes (pads/rotors)

-The non-S has an easier clutch to modulate than the S. After putting close to 30K on my non-S 5-speed, I hopped into my buddy's S and stalled it immediately.

I miss my Mini. Despite what grjr says, it was a hoot to drive (I absolutely LOVE how it drove in the city, and I live in the heart of downtown Toronto).

No verts, no manual Black is a downside too imo, I'll be looking for lighter colors unless it's a super duper deal.

Well brakes and most things I'll probably do myself for her. She lives close enough so it's not a problem. I can't believe anyone would ask damn near $1500 for brakes... This is in CDN I guess? Still seems like a lot.

The Cooper S is out of the question - too much money, and no point. She leisurely drives about 14 miles each day. I've noticed she does like to take curves like a champ (runs in the family I guess) but WOT redline shifts make her think the engine is hurting itself.

Noted on 07 versus 08. So what about 1st gens? A well maintained low mile one?

1st gens are awesome, but ONLY if you get a manual. Mine was a 1st gen (2005) 5-speed with every package available. Here's a breakdown (might be off; it's 2:30am and I'm pulling this from memory)

Sport Package
-17" alloys instead of the 15s
-Handling pack of the Cooper S (springs and whatnot)
-Dynamic Stability Control
-Better brakes
-Sport seats
-Rear deck spoiler
-Chrome exhaust tip

Premium Package
-Panoramic dual sunroofs
-Headlight washers
-Leather wrapped shifter/steering wheel
-Premium sound system

Cold Weather Package
-Engine block heater
-Heated seats
-Advanced Traction Control
-ABS

Lighting Package
-Xenon projector headlamps
-Front fog lights
-Rear fog light

Im starting to lean towards a regular 3 series for her. A 325/8 sedan would be a lot more practical.

If she decides to buy a whole bunch of paper towels and TP at costco where do you put it in a MINI?

Actually, they're fairly roomy inside, as long as you're not putting people in the backseat. The backseat folds down and there is a good amount of space back there.

They're BMW, that's what's wrong.

My main complaints are all fixable with one computer upgrade; they are definite, legit complaints for a car enthusiast.
