Electric tear it up at Pikes

So the doom and gloom of the wreck aside let's take a moment to look into the future of both daily driving and motorsports

EVs did extremely well and even the little shop out of carlsbad, ca placed 4th in the EV class with the electric M3 I was following earlier. It came behind the purpose built megabuck chasis sponsored by large corporations like Toyota, Mitsu and Yokohama but that is still very respectable! Top Gear was there - so look forward to a segment about this in the new season.

But here's the real treat! EVs weren't just competeitive in their own class - take a look at the OVERALL RESULTS.

Top Ten - 6th and 8th are Electrics!

http://livetiming.net/USAC/

EV Class results:

1st.: #230 Fumio Nutahara Japan Toyota Motorsport (race car).................... 10:15.380 OVERALL: 6th!
2nd: #32 Hiroshi Masuoka Iruma Japan Mitsubishi Motors (race car).................10:30.850 OVERALL: 8th!
3rd: #311 Elias Anderson Austin TX HCE (race car).......................................11:00.8 57 OVERALL: 13th!
4th.: #13 Michael Bream Carlsbad CA BMW (sedan car).........,.......................11:58.929
5th: #16 Ikuo Hanawa Ibaraki Japan Summit (race car).................................11:58.974
6th: #34 Beccy Gordon Dana Point CA Mitsubishi Motors (sedan car)...............15:10.557
na: #1 Nobuhiro Tajima Tokyo Japan............................................. ........... Did not finish

The electric M3:

The overall EV class winner:

EVs don't lose power as they gain altitude.

Here's a video of a practice run from the EV M3 - sounds like a 1950s sci-fi movie about flying saucers

So EV's have got the performance part down, but they won't become mainstream (at least in the western part of the U.S.) until..

1. Range is extended to 150+ miles without making a small car weigh 6000lbs
2. Nearly every gas station (even in small, remote towns) has at least one quick charge station
3. Something besides Lithium is used for energy storage. (unless we want to make China the new Saudi Arabia)

If you're willing to eat the increased upfront costs, (the extra you spend could buy a lot of gas for a similar car with conventional power) an EV would be a great choice for someone living in an urban area and has backup transportation for long trips. I hear Ford's new Focus EV has a realistic 75 mile range and charges twice as fast as a Leaf...but that still doesn't cut it for many people. Hybrid is still the way to go if you want to use less dead dinos without too many compromises..

Baby steps Rome wasn't built in one hour!

There are many promising technologies. Between hydrogen fuel cells, on-board generators, swappable battery packs and simply an increasing number of 440v charging spots we should be okay in the near future. A lot of companies are already providing receptacles in their parking lots - progressive companies of course like Google. I wonder if Exxon headquarters has any?

I saw a picture somewhere, on Facebook I think, of a huge lifted F250 parked sideways in a "compact electric" spot with a charge outlet I'll see if I can find it.

Your damn body needs to refuel 2 or 3x a day, which is a huge hassle.

Society will adapt.

But it's possible to eat on the run without costing much time.

Hey, that gives me a great business idea...Mobile recharging trucks. It could be like fighter jets refueling, I'll have my fleet of trucks roaming the long highways in west Texas....anyone that needs a boost just has to call and give GPS coordinates (and a CC#)...my truck will catch up, auto boom into the charging hole and you're good to pass up all the charging stations.

Oh, interesting that Toyota brought that thing over. Though I suppose it figures. Too bad Monster had issues that kept him from making a run.

I'm not going to beat the dead horse about EVs as practical things; I think we did that sufficiently a while ago in a different thread.

I do remember the rolling blackouts. Barely. I'm sure the news version of it that you saw was much more exciting than the couple hours we spent without power.

I'm 28 for the record.
