Am I the only one old enough to remember the firestone/ford explorer fiasco?

it's not just the tires that make a tire failure dangerous or potentially fatal.

That one was really simple. And Ford "won" that one.

You don't win a hate campaign. Hence them getting rid of the exploder......for a long time....and now the new exploder costs 3x's as much as previous generations.

Smart move. I have seen 4 new exploders since they came out......bet those sales are stale as shit.

1) I stand corrected, there was no reason to think that the iFail would change the URL.
2) Old story, we went thru this shit with the Firepwn/Exploder fiasco.
3) Since Apple won the lawsuit over Samsung, we all better step into line and become iPwnistis---resistance is futile, don't'cha know??
4) Money talks, customers don't matter, as long as they give up said money and go away. It's the Murkin way, don't'cha know: profit ber alles.

the Explorer was still one of their biggest sellers, even after the fiasco---DESPITE the fiasco.

And to be honest, Ford did "win", simply because they came up with the pertinent memo that showed they needed Firestone to modify the tires so they could run them 2psi less than originally designed, so the ride height of the explorer (1990+ models) could be 1" lower to mitigate rollover in certain situations. It was also shown that similar Goodyear tires run at the same pressure and ride height did not show tread separation, or cause rollover when a tire failed.

And 2x, ALL cars cost 3x as much as previous versions. The fifth-gen version (the one you mention) broke 100k for 2011, which was a short year for them, and I see plenty of them around.

Firestone tires were pretty shitty back in the 90's, but really it wasn't until Ford added IRS (my parents had an 03 and it didn't have the solid axle) and then later some sort of stability control that the rollover issue went away for the most part.

And yet the mustang.... why ford, why... Well I couldn't care less personally but if that was my bag I'd wonder.

I think what's funny is that the whole rollover "issue" didn't really become a national hysteria until someone in Venezuela died because of a rollover, and it became clear that the Venezuelan Firestone plant wasn't putting the extra nylon belt that Ford requested be added so the tires could take being run at a lower pressure--never mind that a large majority of those rollovers happened to older Explorers that were high-mileage, low- (or no) maintenance, and the drivers severely overreacted to the tire separation/blowout. After that, it was pure bandwagonning by the attention whores that couldn't be bothered to check tire pressures and condition.
