Yeah, a cheap Miata will be dogged out and not drive like it's supposed to, unless you get some killer deal. My '90 had 28k miles, ran like a swiss watch, looked brand new, and was never abused or raced, and I changed out every fluid regularly, I even kept fresh brake fluid in it - regularly bleeding every line.

so the car i linked to looked like a good deal to me, so i took it to a shop to have them look it over. man, what an awesome idea.

- rust on the undercarriage
- differential had been replaced
- a bolt holding an exhaust bracket had been misthreaded and not screwed in all the way.
- the engine had been replaced, but it was a mazda crate motor.
- the front and rear bumpers had been replaced.
- the trunk had been replaced.
- clutch felt mushy to the guy, probably had been replaced.

the guy said that it would be a good deal for 6-7k, not 10.8k. he said it would have been a good candidate for a spec racer, but not at almost 11k, plus i don't want a spec-miata. these guys build spec-miata race cars (they had like 6 in the garage), so i'm sure they know what they're talking about when it comes to miatas. paid $100 and the guy said he'd do 3 more for me. best $100 i've ever spent on a car.

needless to say, the search continues....

good call matt01, most people just balk at the few bucks that it'd cost to have it checked out and just buy blindly

Could be, but it'd still be false advertising and a good reason to fucking forget it. If the original engine bombed on a responsible owner, he would've documented why and how and kept the original tach.

well, i think pending a PPI and if i can get these guys to come down on their price, i'll be a mazdaspeed miata owner come saturday.

i'm pretty excited. i broke the tires loose in second when the boost hit on my test drive so i don't think i'll be losing much to the 335i in terms of fun. should be a fun little car.
