What do you want to play? $500 is a tough budget for a gaming rig considering a good graphics card would eat up 2/3 of that budget.

Here are your key components: SSD, Decent GPU, and Quad Core. The difference between the price of a dual core and quad core isn't huge so you might as well spend a bit more for the extra performance rather than buy an already outdated product. The GPU is key for gaming so don't skimp on that. And the SSD will give you the biggest jump in everyday performance. All of these components will only increase the total cost by two or three hundred.

For a gaming PC at $500, I would definitely not get an SSD yet. For the cost of an SSD, OP could upgrade from a 'meh' gfx card to a pretty awesome one. And it's easier to upgrade by just adding an SSD than trying to get rid of a cheap videocard to pay for a faster one.

I am in the same boat as the OP. If anyone came up with a optimal list that would be great. Saw the link, but frankly have no idea if it is right or not.

You should have black colored band aids, those are racist band aids only for white people, do you only treat white people?

500 dollars isn't enough to build a PC you are proud of. He needs to increase his budget a few hundred dollars!

Once you use a SSD, you won't want to use a hard disk drive. SSDs are now affordable and you can use extra/external drives if neccesary. USB enclosures can be purchased for 20-30 bucks.

You should list what parts you have already like monitor, case, psu or whatever. And you need to keep an eye on slickdeals for parts. I saw a GTX 460 on there:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...467&CatId=3669

and if you pay with Visa:

http://usa.visa.com/personal/discoun...668&pageId=197

bringing it down to $80AR.

You could always go with an AMD A8 based setup and use the integrated graphics for awhile. Once you throw a copy of win 7 into the cost you should still be able to do that for under $500. Or just wait till the A10 trinity shows up. Won't be a powerhouse but should be enough for crap like D3.
