war is ok if that is what is required. Collateral damage is unavoidable.

I never really understood what recent hackers wanted to achieve with their breaches of security. Is it simply to prove that they're able if they want to?

I believe that the general consensus is that hackers aim to cause damage, crackers just get off on the challenge of getting in. I suspect that this recent streak was a result of a hive/crowd mentality: "We're all psyched-up, why stop with Sony when we can steam-roll all these other Big Businesses?"

Good thing my former computer science teacher doesn't post here, otherwise he'd quote you and go on an hour long rant about why hackers are good and say that the correct term for a cyber criminal is a cracker. Although it makes sense why the mainstream media won't use the word cracker since it's also a derogatory term for a white person. Not that I know any white people who are actually offended by the word or care which word is used to describe a cyber good and bad guy.

Pretty sure you have it backwards. Why would "crackers" get off on the challenge? They're "cracking" the system, you know, damaging it.

I interpreted the terms as "hacking" away at something and "cracking" a safe combination. Apparently I was wrong about how some others interpret them.
