Portable air conditioners?

Anyone using portable air conditions? I mean real air conditioners which vent outside not the air evaporation crap.

Are they as good as regular room ACs? Any recommendations for brands and models?

I don't want to get a a room AC, because my landlord requires a through-the-wall AC and no window ACs. I don't want to commit to a wall AC not knowing how long I'll be staying here.

I have on in my shed, it works well. They are rated by BTU just the same as any A/C unit.

I could not tell you the brand on it though.

I have one thats pretty decent. I believe its a haier. Quality wise its pretty good ive had it for like 3 years. Its convenient if you cant get a window ac but its not as efficient. I dont have the exact numbers but my window ac has like 2000 more btus than the portable one and they both use the same amount of power. With the portable one even though it vents most of the shit outside you still have to manually drain the water from it every now and then. Its really not big of a deal since i only needed to do that once a week. And make sure you get some old towels or something to put around the exhaust for the window to keep the hot air out.

they're louder in my experience... the whole compressor is inside your room rather than outside (and behind a bunch of sound blocking) like in window ACs...also the water draining gets to be a PITA... my friend's unit would fill up twice a day, so she couldn't even leave it running while at work or it would leak onto the floor (and it actually did, and ruined the parquet)

did you measure the space for the wall-through AC? i've had other friends ghetto rig window ACs into wall sleeves with some strips of wood and insulation.... worked well enough

you mean a ductless system or a spot cooler
look into a ductless you would have a outdoor unit and a SMALL unit that would hang above a door or something. they do work really well depending on the application.. ive installed a few of them

My friends have on at the office. It's better than a simple fan, but less efficient than a wall mounted one.

They're alright. I have two to do the townhome we're renting. Combined, they keep the place bearable in the middle of summer. Definitely use a lot of power though (12 amps I think, when the compressor is running)...super-efficient they are not. The Airworks unit is quiet enough that it is possible to sleep in the same room. The Goldstar unit I have is really noisy, but cools much more effectively and I never seem to have to drain it manually...The exhaust on both units gets very hot and radiates a lot of heat back into the room if I don't wrap it in something.

This would cost something like 4 times what a portable air conditioner costs. At least that, probably more by the time you factor in paying someone like you to install it

A ductless split mini A/C unit is a better option, but more expensive and permanent.
