Mortal Online, UO style mmorpg now w/discount and free trial.

Got an email that they were having a July special with 30% off the price (making it just under 25 usd or so).

I haven't played since early beta but never got around to much since my old computers video card conflicted with the game and the price at release was a bit high for me.

However now seems like a great time to jump in with the game, maybe try the trial out first then jump in if I like it.

They just released a big update called Dawn, which added in a whole gene type of system for mounts and animal breeding, along with combat tweaks/archery, etc.

Few videos with an overview:

edit - wtf? youtube tags broken or what?

I played the alpha of this ages ago. It was buggy as heck then, but something impressed me about it that no other game has had.

The sheer scale of everything. A 200 foot tall castle is 200 feet tall, it towers hugely above your head, feels enormous.

Mountains are miles taller than you, distances across town accurate. Its the only game ive ever seen, where the world doesnt feel "crunched"

Still looks just as clunky, boring and unpolished as beta.

Loved it during beta, never really had any issues. Hows the server populations now?

Not too bad, but mobile games "Aura Ball" and "Tiger of the Pacific" are better.

How has this guy not been banned yet? Clearly a spammer

I saw this game when it was in beta and it looked really good, but it seems the population is very low. I would love to see a game with open pvp that actually had a good population for more then 3 months.

You should have black colored band aids, those are racist band aids only for white people, do you only treat white people?

Played for around a half hour and then uninstalled. Little to no tutorial system exists, and games that say something like "it's open world, do whatever you want!" as an excuse for not having an proper new player introduction are bound to fail. Especially with what appears to be such a complex learning curve.

Don't get me wrong, I played UO for 5 or 6 years and enjoyed every moment of it, but Mortal Online is a pathetic attempt at trying to recreate an old concept for modern times.

Controls are clunky and un-intuitive. Character creation is not explained well, if at all. I was under the impression that this game was recently released, but then I found out it's been available for more than a year.

Graphics and environments are the only thing this game has going for I as far as I can tell, but all of that is worthless if they can't make me want to play the game right off the bat.

Thing is, the problem with these games is the ability to grief people easily. There is a difference between griefing and pvp. The devs put in mechanics for griefing, which kills their game.

It just makes bad business sense to have some features that only appeal to maybe 1% of players.

You can have a good pvp system, but make it more risk/reward for killing monsters and questing. All pvp zones have the best rewards, where as the "safe" zones have crappy rewards. Eventually people will move out into the pvp zone when they get comfortable with their play.

Avoid mechanics like stealing, and don't allow maxed out players access to new players. The max guys will just sit and kill the new people all day until they quit, then your game dies, congrats.

New players are protected for a time when you make one.

On top of this, just like in UO, if you kill/steal from someone (and get caught stealing) you will be flagged, and open to be killed from anyone without penalty.
Also in towns, if you attack someone or steal, the guards will spawn and kill you if someone asks for them.

If you kill a certain number of people you turn red, once you are red you are insta-attacked in cities by guards and many non-pkers will kill you.

Being able to steal things is a player choice, it takes time to skill up and if you are caught stealing it becomes bad news for you quickly.

The point of the rpg, is to allow players the choice to play how they want.

MMO's have lost this aspect by far. Almost every mainstream mmo now you are ALWAYS mr. Goody two shoes (even if you are playing a different faction) you still play the role of the hero of your people/faction and help them.

Being able to be a "bad" player, to steal, kill others, etc is an option that MANY people love in single player rpgs and routinely take the role of, in games from clasasic rpgs like Fallout to newer ones like Mass Effect.

However in mmo's this has became a thing of the past, simply neglected or thought of as "bad."

I don't play those types of characters. I DO play the "mr. goody two shoes" in rpgs. I don't steal, I don't pk people.

However I LOVE the fact that those other people exist. Why? Because it creates a world that's 'more alive, more diverse, and creates unique situations.

When you come across a red player attacking someone, or a group, and you randomly join in and help stop the attack, there's something special there that you simply do not get in any other mmo.

When you play the "good guy" in games where EVERYONE else is that role, and are foced to be it, it becomes boring, and loses the entire aspect of it.

However when the world is open and there are people on both sides, the choices you make have a MUCH larger impact not only on the game for yourself, but other people.

When you have to actually trust people you play with, you form bonds and things that simply don't exist in most mmo's anymore. Knowing that someone helped you in the past, it creates a sense of trust.

Because of those kinds of things I still talk and play with people I met back in UO, because the nature of the game fostered a social aspect that many mmo's do not.

MO is much the same way.

I do admit, the game REALLY REALLY needs a much better tutorial/getting you into the world aspect for new players. It's quite daunting when you start. However if you give it time, at least a week of playing (not just half an hour, that' snot enough to make a choice imo) it can quickly grow on you.

HEll in half an hour you haven't probably experienced any of the aspects that make the game unique.

On their youtube account (from the videos posted by mortalonline themselves) there are some tutorials there that can be helpful, and the forums have some good starting guides and things.

In a game where, when you die you lose your shit and skills and everything else. a shitty server would mean almost endless possibilities for rage due to server , and I had endless rage once I got out of the noobzone and actually started cutting down trees and mining rocks and shit to have people build me things.

the open world aspect was , and is really incredible though , learning how to ride a horse is hilarious and "breaking" a new horse to make it not throw your ass off every 2 seconds is alot of fun too

edit :: did they fix the servers? I rage typed and realized later I didnt even ask if the servers are better now
