california law check: legal to carry an UNconcealed sword in public?

my friend had some crazy idea about walking around town or going into bestbuy or something with a sword on his belt.

is this legal?

sidenote: i dont know if its a single or double edge sword, and it is sharp.

legal, yes, but as mofug said, not advised.
similarly, you can carry around an unconcealed gun in california like most sane states... but only unloaded, which is pretty silly, and any officer is going to give you a damn hard time about it and possibly assume it is loaded which could result in an embarrasing "FREEZE, HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM" and the whole shebang.

In fact this section is the only place in the california penal code that mentions swords, and its only cane swords :

umm...i dont know....you may want to call your local authorities and ask.

different states got different rules, but of all states, CA is not a state i would try and pull this stunt with if your not 100% sure.

The main thing you got to remember is that you cannot claim its for self defense because the police wont buy that. If you were serious about self defense, you would get a CCW and a gun. just an FYI in case they stop you.

certainly not illegal in some states. California ... maybe. Of course, Best Buy is allowed its own sword and gun policy, they could kick you out for concealed open carry (concealed is of course undetectable), this really only applies to public property.

I am fairly sure that concealed it would count as a concealed weapon, which would not be legal without a permit.

The laws for almost the entire country are written in such a way that if you are carrying a non-concealed weapon it is entirely legal UNLESS THERE IS A COMPLAINT. Meaning that you can carry your six gun on your hip anywhere you want, but if a police officer, pedestrian, clown, or street salesmen sees you and feels threatened you can get cited/the weapon confiscated.
