Watch the discussions on medical-professional news services like ProMed (which has been INSANELY active with H5N1 discussions for a while now). Watch for quietly-posted reports of governments buying up flu vaccines like mad, especially Tamiflu, which is one of a very few drugs that seems to work on H5N1. Watch what people that are or should be in the know DO, not what they SAY.

That said, your question is a good one. Is H5N1 the "big one" the immunology world has been fearing? Will it be the next global pandemic superflu that kills tens (or hundreds - remember, the world's population is WAY higher now than it was in 1918) of millions? Nobody knows - yet. That'd be why there's so much concern now, before it mutates into something capable of direct human-to-human transmission.

oO

Actually, Tamiflu does not work anymore at all. If your interested maybe I can find the link, but its on a newer news story.

Killer bees were entirely media hype. With SARS, West Nile, and bird flu, highly trained health experts have confirmed the very real threat. The fact that SARS was brought under control is a testament to fast action on the part of public health officials.

Local media here in toronto confirmed today that it was legionnaires disease that killed people in the old folks home.

one tabloid newspaper had a headline that read: "ITS NOT SARS"

While birdflu is very scary, Sars was still media hype.
it only killed old people, and people with compromised immune systems.

If it was as potent as media reports made it seem, the actions of the government to try to contain it would have been much less effective.
