Comcast pricing scheme retarded

So, the budget at home is tight. We made the decision that since we have people in college in the house who need the net. We would drop the phone service and television service.

Telling the dude on the phone we need to shut off the Television and phone service (We'd start using our cells as our primary phones), he starts the somewhat typical scrambling about the price. But, he agrees to it and starts doing the math. He comes back with "You're net service plus modem rental will be $85 a month, plus tax".

This was a fair drop form the $158 a month we were otherwise playing. So I was happy with this. BUT. he comes back with this gem. If we will return all but one of our television boxes, and agree to sigh up for the basic cable package for television. We can have THAT, AND Our internet service.. For $65 a month... $20 less than the cost of JUST the net service.

This is retarded pricing. And it tells me something I knew intrinsically already.

The various television production companies are bloating television with more channels so they can have more "Air time" to sell for advertising. That's why so many channels have come out that seem in a lot of cases so pointless.

If Comcast can afford to sell me TV AND Internet at a lesser rate than just internet because the TV producers are paying them so much, why are they even charging for television in the first place?

Why don't they just offer Internet and telephone and whatever else, and add television for like.. $5 instead? Offer television as a "bonus" to their services?

On a side note, the comcast phone menu I accessed has a new function. NOW they have a menu offer to send you to someone who will work with you to downgrade your services. So it looks like they have enough egg on their faces with service reps trying to con you or keep your business as is.

lots of people still think they are paying for television service not internet., changing the price structure would only confuse most people.

I had similar beliefs when I was given the same offer many years ago.

Comcast is a cable TV company first, and an ISP second. Television in general is basically fucking doomed at this point, they are **absolutely** doing this to buff TV viewership stats.

We had Time Warner from 1987 - 2006, when they were bought out locally by Comcast, and we've had them ever since.

This is the second time we've tried to downgrade our service. Last time though we kept our service because they were willing to give us a promotional price instead.

This was the first time he HAD to downgrade our service. Just surprises me is all that they cold afford to drop the internet price BECAUSE we agreed to keep television channels. We damn well should get Television for FREE in a basic package.. hell EVERYONE who can reach the cable box should.. since they are CLEARLY getting paid so much or it that actually giving those channels costs nothing.

Hell you think they would offer it to make the television channels pay them more.

typing in caps does not make your point true. they're a business. my feeling is that landline telephone service should be free. doens't mean it should be. just like tv shouldn't be.

that doesn't mean the business is correct here either.

if anything it means the american people are too complacent to do a god damned thing about it.

You are just a number. The more numbers (aka cable Tv subscribers) Comcast has, the more leverage they have with content producers/studios. It is very much in comcasts favor to have more subscribers to show to shareholders, especially in the era of cordcutting (see OP).

They are willing to make less profit from you now in order to promise investors and cable channel owners that they have one more subscriber tied down for x more months.

Frankly what they are offering is likely MORE expensive for them than just straight Internet. The guy on the other end gets to say you only canceled phone. It's also a bundle price because you have two products instead of just one. This is similar to Insurance. A separate car and home package would be more expensive than a combined package.

The basic package is a complete waste unless you are not close enough to over the air antennas to receive the channels. You would likely get a TON more channels and in much better quality if you invest in a good antenna.
