Save about $140 getting a 5850 and OC'ing it - which coincidentally is the price of a 5870
6870 isn't a bargain.

I can't find the link to the article where they up'd the voltage, but the 5850 still won. It has more headroom than a 6870.

Wonder if a new mid-range unit would beat the 950?

My old C2D6600 can't keep up with my GTX285, even when it's overclocked to 3.2ghz.

anyone?

I'm so out of touch with modern hardware. I don't even know where to begin looking.

900-series is the hot shit. Whatever the low 900s one is these days is the hotness. Hexacores are supported in the same socket but are ~$1000 and you'll never use all of them at this point, but you have the option in the future. x58 has SLI/crossfire, trichannel 24GB of ram; you should be set for a while.
Not sure what the price is on AMD stuff, or how much you save dropping to the lower intel socket for the 500 series.
With an x58 (and hexacores on the same socket,) I don't think I've ever felt this "future proof" in regards to motherboard/ram/cpu before.

They're coming soon, the new Amd chips sounds crazy sharing cache across all the cores. The new Intel ones supposedly can get to 5ghz on air. I would wait for the new stuff as it shouldn't be too far off.
