Wanted your thoughts on it.

As a professional artist turning out paintings of celestial vistas using rattle cans and salad bowls on the streets of Boston, the convenience of the Square reader has tripled my daily business, to the point that the quality of my paintings has...

I've only read bits and pieces about it. It sounds cool, but I wonder if it will really take off. I'm sure there are measures in place to prevent abuse, but you know people will try.

I think there's a few apps that let you charge CCs without extra hardware, though I guess this is more convenient.

You can manually enter CC numbers with this as well, but pretty much any app that does that charges more.

It's not the app. It's the merchant processor and the risk of card not present vs card present transactions.

Yes technically the card is present, but the way you prove that to the bank is by swiping it.

I use it and am happy with it. They get the money to me within 72 hours which is nice. I only took cash and check before so this has definitely benefitted me to take payment in any form. Its a little flimsy and people do me when I pull it out because it looks 'cheesy'. But - it does the job.

This would be great for computer work. Since it's almost always in the field with random people, checks aren't the best payment.

didn't they just hook up with VISA or something too?

I have one sitting in front of me, but I've never used it yet. It sounds great for attending trade shows and selling a product at the actual event. It takes 3.5%, which is what my current real processor takes as well Unfortunately for me, all my transactions are card not present so we get charged the highest rate.

What I don't like is that you have to have actual internet to use it. You can't batch them and then run it all when you get wifi. So if you're in a trade show and they don't have good cell signal inside (most don't), you have to pay for their wifi for the day.

What I do love is that it takes Visa, MC, and Amex by default, no need to sign your Amex account up all over again separate. Also, it's free!

It only does 3.5 if you manually process it. 2.75 if swipe.

Edit: I missed the part about being card not present transactions.. oops... Sorry

Even then, I still believe that with Square, you are charged 3.5% on a swiped transaction. That's just how it works, a flat fee but there's no signup agreement. My current processor apparently had me in a 3 year agreement and it auto renewed for 3 years! I had no idea and switched processors a couple months back so that I have all my banking and processing in 1 institution. Now my old company (Sage) wants $25 per month for 21 months for me to cancel. So I told them to shove it, keep my account active. I'm going to run my own CC once a month for $1 and just pay the $10 monthly fee that I normally pay instead of the $25 per month fee. We'll see how that goes.

Thanks I see that now, I wonder if they changed that as I got mine before the program was released to the masses. I wish I could clone myself and put this thing to good use on a trade show floor
