It is NOT supposed to be a stumbling rough idle at start up. There is definitely something wrong with the car and its best to just figure out what it is instead of just tossing parts at it.

And seriously, I can't believe you think this mechanic is competent.

I never said it was supposed to be stumbling or had a rough start up

what is with you people

calm your fucking nuts down jesus fucking christ

the compression test WILL be fucking done I just don't have fucking time to do it in the morning before work...

I don't get where you people get off accusing this guy of being incompetent/shitty when he has actually worked on it and you people are thousands of miles away and only have my insane babbling on which to base your diagnoses

The motor is bought, the testing can and will wait until Saturday. The only time I'd have to do a compression test I'm either sleeping or its pitch black out.

I have options, if the motor is blown, I keep my new longblock and have it installed. If the motor tests out fine (which it won't,) I sell the motor back to the previous owner which he has already agreed to.

This. It may be low across the board, low in one or two cylinders, any number of things. ideally you do that even before you buy an "enthusiast" owned turbo car

It doesn't help that your story changes every week. First it's grounds, then it was flooding and you thought rings were bad, then it runs only at high RPM, and now it runs ok except cold...

Eliminate doubt in at least one area, how tight that motor is. Then you can compare those numbers to your new one when that gets installed. Usually you see compression numbers in build threads - on page #1 - well before you buy another engine on page #30

my story isn't "changing" you degenerate

work is being done on the car and different things happen... the condition of the car changes as I learn more about the problems it's currently having... this is without a doubt the least productive most pointless discussion I've ever been a part of here... The motor will be compression tested. I'm committed to doing the testing... on S A T U R D A Y so fuck off until then

Or I could just lie and say the numbers are 165 165 165 140 so you people can post whatever retarded opinions pop into your head and go jerk your dicks elsewhere?

DO the compression test. HAVE someone competent check for vaccum leaks. TROUBLESHOOT properly.

Then worry about replacing components. If it runs without lots of smoke, its probably not a mechanical problem.

No kidding - there could be any number of things causing it to run lean (and stumble) at cold start.

1) IACV broken/miswired
2) FICD broken/miswired
3) whatever lights off the cat at startup might be broken/miswired (dunno if that's on an MR2, but it's on a ton of Nissans).

All of those can cause air to show up in the manifold in unexpected amounts.

the mechanic said there was no reason to even do this test while the motor was warm, I agree with his logic.

The motor is between 19 and 20 in/hg at idle while warm.

Where you just complaining about rough running after a cold start? That's not "running flawlessly."

A compression test will rule out the possibility of damaged rings or cylinder bores. I'm pretty sure that's not what your problem is, but you need to do it so you can for sure rule that out, and move on to troubleshooting all the crap that's stuck on the outside of the engine that can cause this behavior.

I'm still betting vacuum leak that goes away when the motor warms up.
