Apparently I am turning in to a old man...

I have been wanting a newer, cheap beater. The e30 is just to rough for me to want to drive, the GXL rx7 I just got needs love, and in all reality I want 4 seats. So I have been looking and came up with the following cars:

1992-1995 BMW E34 (525/530/535)
1992-1997 Lexus SC 300
1996-2001 Audi A4
1990's Merdeces (unknown yet, still reading)

The only exception is if I find a 240z, I will buy it... but not as a daily.

My wife says I am a old man looking over the cars I chose, what would you guys take? Spending under $5k total. Closer to $2-3 that need work.

i thought this was a cadillac thread

given those four choices, you have horrible taste in old man cars. but i'd go with the mercedes.

If you do look at any early 90's Benz make sure its 1994 and before. The rest will be bad news.

i loved my sc300 (i had a 98 though with the vvti engine). It was comfy and just relaxing to drive. i ended up giving it to my aunt, but i'd recommend an SC to anyone who wants a long ass comfy cruiser.

I have a '94 A4 (north america didn't get them until 95) and I really enjoy it. It's a great high-speed cruiser (slightly loud, but very solid) and cheap to maintain. It can easily run 100-120mph all day with minimal input from the driver ... the drivetrain seems to really enjoy being above 4krpm (80mph).

It really depends on the driving you do ... if you do a lot of highway ... I'd go German (Audi/MB/BMW) ... if you don't, look at the Japanese.

Where are you located? Is rust/snow/theft an issue?

Also are you comfortable with german electronics?

i would go for the bmw or audi. the 1.8t was a fun engine, not bad to upgrade, just hope all the electrical gremlins have been worked out. i don't know much about the e34, but when i have been in them, i have loved them.
