When you first log in, you're going to think, "Oh great, another WoW clone." But it's really a WAR clone more than anything else . It's what Warhammer should have been, minus the keep sieges.

The game even has leftover WAR developers and the influence is really clear. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it does seem like the developers took the good things from MMO's like WoW, WAR, and EQ2 and threw it all into one game and polished it up. The quests aren't anything to write home about, but there are tons of them. The public quests are getting better, such as full zone planar invasions that require everyone to work together to stop it or else they don't get to turn in a quest for quite some time (since the quest NPC's are off fighting the invasions).

There are going to be 10 instances and 2 raid dungeons on release. The instances are scripted and pretty challenging. They dungeons aren't exactly a cake walk and the boss fights are unique.

The interesting thing about Rift is its soul system which in a sense lets you create a class to fit your needs: Rogue tanks, mage healers, and overpowered clerics You can switch out the souls whenever you want and create a new class on the fly.

PvP is being fleshed out a bit. Right now they have several warfronts(battlegrounds) that are similar to what we found in WAR, such as hold the DOT item or capture and hold points. There's also a Conquest type warfront where they will mix pvp and pve, but they haven't released that content yet.

Open world PvP is interesting because of the PvE invasions going on, such as Guardians (good side) invading the Defiant's territory. You can help take small NPC spawn points called footholds, or defend them. Right now there's not much too it other than that, but I think the purpose is that in the end your side will be taking over entire zones for whatever purpose.

--
Right now there's some balancing issues going on with the classes. Rogues don't scale well and clerics/tanks are ridiculous--although clerics are getting the nerf bat soon.

--
Third of four bosses in Realm of the Fae (level 18-20 instance on Guardian side).

All the bosses, not just the final one are scripted like this and usually have some kind of voiceover.

Does it have the best thing about warhammer, the pvp "tier" system? So you can pvp at ANY lv and not feel useless unless you hit lv cap?

that was great, but it still needed balancing. when you went in and everyone was X7 - X9 and the other team was X0 - X5, half your team could go AFK and you'd still decisively win.

Unfortunately it does not have the tier pvp system. There's a lot of talk on the forums about implementing something similar or at least changing the level range from x1-x5 instead of the current lvl x0-x9. The developers have been making a lot of game changes based on player feedback, so there's a possibility that we might see a change to the system. Although, I've noticed that I've been able to people significantly higher than me if played skillfully--or they just really suck. One thing that I didn't mention about warfronts was that they've implemented the cross-server warfronts, so queuing doesn't take too long, which you can do from anywhere.

Another thing I didn't mention about the soul system was that you can buy three other role slots, which allow you to switch builds on the fly. For instance, if you have a build of three souls that make you a DPS glass cannon mage, you can cast a 2 second change roll skill to switch to a build that makes you a healer mage, or maybe you want to quickly switch between pvp build to pve build, etc.

Vandal on Reclaimer(PVP)

I got to level 13 last night, but I'm having this problem with my wireless card where I get straight up disconnected every few minutes. Sometimes it's 10 seconds in game and I'm d/ced. It happens in Minecraft, too so I'm pretty sure it's not the game itself. If anyone knows how to fix an Atheros wifi card from disconnecting randomly, please let me know.

My friends and I are rolling on the same server
Guardian or Defiant?

I have an Atheros card and had the same problem, I just stopped using wireless. I know that's not much of a solution but from what I gathered it's a shit card or the software is crappy, sorry.

I read probably 60% of the first post and said "this could be the greatest MMO to date, no thanks."

It's pretty good so far, I'm going to try out pvp, see what the warfronts are like, but so far I agree.

It's fun but nothing spectacular. I think they were sort of going for that, though. Something anyone can pick up and play and it will make them feel right at home. I almost don't like how much customization there is, but maybe it's just because I don't have the time to go through and choose between 2000 different playstyles... Just sayin'.

I will say though, if you like wow, you will most likely like this game. It is fresh, the RIFTs are really fun, questing feels brand new, it's honestly a pretty good stab at an MMO. No big fail stick like WAR or Conan had right from the start. The story is fun to play with, the questing isn't boring, and the classes are definitely a step above wow as far as being a dynamic class are. And while most of the class combinations you'd play are similar to that in wow, there's just something special about this class system.

I'd say give the beta a try if you have the time, why not it's free, and see how you like it. I've enjoyed it a lot, but with my school and etc I really just don't have the time to really get into this game like I did SWG or WoW.

BTW, I noticed early on, a lot of the features feel old-school pre-CU SWG mixed with EQ mixed with vanilla WoW. If any one of these was something that interested you, definitely look at this game.

edit: I realize that first sentence is a little contradictory. I meant it's pretty good so far. It's fun, it's attention-grabbing, but so far I agree with most of you. it's nothing BRAND new, it's still an MMO. It does have some new, and old, features, very polished and definitely fun.

i've got a level 19 warlock/necro/dominator for leveling (mostly warlock) and a archmage/pyromancer spec for pvp.

the warlock thing is kinda fun, but the archmage/pyromancer is a fucking beast. i'm regularly doing 20k dmg in the 10 - 19 battlegrounds, sometimes 30k if they leave me alone. it's insane.

Got to 21 on an AOE mage build.

Nearing the end of the newbie zone it was a bit too familiar to WoW and I got that sinking feeling of pointlessness until the actual end (Rift) when I kinda sat up in my seat and felt like that was actually fun. In fact a lot was happening all around me the entire time.

Outside of the Newbie zone, things picked up pretty nicely. The Rifts are definitely fun and the way groups seem to autoform on story quests where you might need help on is a welcome change too.

My only problem with the game is that there isn't a sense of individualization and you can't really tell races apart except for the odd short dwarf. Also, I can't say much of the map is memorable from the 3rd person view. It's seriously packed with content and people right now though.

Honestly, I'd say it's between this and GW2 and what Rift does right is supposed to be what GW2 is all about.

You really need to get out of the newbie zone (level 7+) to really experience what the game is like, but don't expect anything more than a polished up MMO that has done the basics right (for the most part anyways).
