Yeah, Vinnie pretty much comes up with the crux of the problem.

Producing a product that is more user-friendly for people who don't buy it than the legitimate customers is a stupid move. Also making a product that isn't self-sufficient is a poor move. If I buy a table, I want to buy the table, not the rights to use it for 5 years (after which it is taken away, equivalent of them shutting their servers down).

I can appreciate why developers/publishers do this, but it is very damaging to the consumer and the pirates themselves don't feel it at all.

PC gaming deserves to die if the companies are going to abuse their paying customers like this. They encourage piracy, nothing more.

You can scream that BS "businesses exist to make money, not kiss your butt" mantra, but in the end, it's the companies that respect their customers that last. Any company slapping DRM into their games deserves to go out of business and every employee on the streets.

I didn't read all of LLC's comments, but i agree with him. Stiler's always liked to complain about something. Complaining about this should be near the bottom of the list imo.

as for "servers will shut down in 3 years". they'll patch the game to not need their servers.
hell, it will be hacked long before then where you won't need to use their servers.

query: someone said PC gaming was a 9b a year business. Is that revenue or profit?

Unless they say profit, it's revenue.

So basically you understand that this won't stop piracy and serves no real purpose other then to be another hurdle for paying legit customers to jump through yet it's nothing to complain about?

To me this sort of thing is right up there with the limited install/activations where to have to call up a company once you run out to ask permission to install a game you already bought.

Jump through how? Do you disconnect your internet when playing a game?

This is a non issue for anyone posting on this board.

Yes, it's a non issue, until your net goes down or EA has server problems (Which they tend to have for new/popular games).

Example - steam has offline mode... What's so wrong with that?

Although for making stuff count to a a character account and keeping it hack-resistant online connectivity sounds good.

Profits from video games make movie companies cry for getting in the wrong business

The one-day record holder for a movie premiere is Spiderman 3, which brought in $59 million in ticket sales on its opening day.

Spring's opening blockbuster brought in $500 million in sales. It was the biggest entertainment opening ever. But it wasn't a movie…

Grand Theft Auto IV, a video game, recorded sales of $310 million… on its first day.

...

The cost to make an average game can run from $10 to $50 million. When you compare that to the average 2007 movie cost of $106 million, you can see why the profit margins are so attractive.

Not necessarily. Depending on how this "feature" is set up, it could be onerous for anyone wanting to play this game from a setting other than their home.

Granted, I don't usually play games that way, but under certain circumstances, I can imagine wanting to play video games on my laptop while I'm traveling or something, and a feature that requires connectivity to the internet would stop me from doing that.

It may be a non-issue in the sense that it doesn't actually cause a problem for most customers, but it's an unnecessary requirement that smacks of lazy design as opposed to any real concern for the quality and enjoyability of the final product.

You people shouldn't be mad at the developers for doing this, you should be mad at the thieves that steal games forcing their hand.

Nobody works for free... if most of the retards that pirate games would leave their mom's basement and enter the real world they would notice that it sucks to not get paid for your hard work.

The point is every single person who pirates the game will be downloading a crack, and if they know how to download a crack they know how to download the one that disables internet check. Which means that exactly the same number of people who would have pirated the game will still pirate it, and only the paying customer is left to sift through whatever wrecks occur due to faulty software, servers down, or their internet being down (oh lord who would want to boot up some single player game if your internet is currently down).

God damned pirates ruin it for everyone. If only they could put as much effort into getting jobs as they do cheating the system they would be able to afford to pay for their shit.

Losers.

You're missing the point. People will download unauthorized copies of the game regardless. These "counter-measures" do nothing to prevent that. It only hurts the paying customer. If anyone is doing any forcing, it's the publisher's legal dept.
