xbox 360 5.1 options
so my receiver only supports hdmi passthrough (onkyo 506) and i have the arcade 360. currently i have a hdmi cable connected from 360 to receiver, then receiver to tv to play it. i get video and audio through the tv, NOT the speaker.
what is the best way to get audio on the speakers here? is the hdmi "cable" for 360 and an optical the best/cheapest way? is there any benifit of that over the component cable for 360? |

i thought component was just stereo audio
i googled and found that the 506 doesn't seem to let the receiver process HDMI audio.... (apparently mentioned on page 21 of manual) i may be wrong, but i think you'll need the 360 optical adapter thing (or mod your component cable) and use hdmi for vid/optical for audio edit: here's a pic i found of the adapter ![]() |

since my receiver doesn't support hdmi, i picked up an hdmi switch with digital output.
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2 works quite well for $50 but back-ordered frequently.

If your speakers have an optical plugin,

you'd you you do
|
You can get the optical audio dongle on ebay for like $10-$20... some of the ones that are $10 are not official microsoft products, but I don't see that mattering at all.

i'm not sure i understand why it's not working-- shouldn't you be able to connect your tv to the receiver, your 360 to your tv, and just have your tv output to the receiver? I know on my Vizio plasma, it's kind of a PITA to set up and you have to turn off the speakers for it to output audio, but even if you're just using the passthrough through your receiver, your TV should output to your receiver. By "Only supports HDMI passthrough": do you mean that it won't allow input through the HDMI port? because if so, wtf? wouldn't that just mean that the hdmi port on the receiver is just a glorified cable extender? |

he didnt tell us what kind of TV he had... i have a Hitatchi CRT Projection HDTV and it does not have an HDMI plug in. only a DVI. so to get around this and have multiple HD Connections going to the TV you would use the Receiver to bypass the signal but unfortunately on the lower end models of these type of receivers it will only do the the video pass not audio. hence the reason need the secondary optical connection. my setup Hitatchi 51F500A Yamaha HTR-6130 Motorla DCT6412 PS3 |
